Desert Island Top 10 w/ rules...
Ok, what is everyones 10 albums that they would take if they knew that they were going to be stranded on an Island for a lengthy period of time. The rules are:

You must choose 10 albums from any generation, no compilations (soundtracks are not allowed unless it's a score) or greatest hits albums.
You cannot choose any artists more than once.
Other than that...pick away and provide at least some reasons for your selections....

    Here are my choices:

David Bowie: ZIGGY STARDUST - so many great albums to choose from, but this one takes the cake mainly for the songs It Aint' Easy and Lady Stardust

Jocelyn Pook's UNTOLD THINGS - great laid back and mellow for those evenings of contemplation on the island.

Philip Glass THE HOURS soundtrack - superb contemplative recording.

Stevie Wonder's INNERVISIONS - bring some funk and reality into the picture for those ocassions of joy.

Sigur Ros AGAETIS BYRJUN - just something fun to listen to.

Jimi Hendrix BAND OF GYPSIES - one of my favorite guitar-driven recordings.

Alan Parsons Project EYE IN THE SKY - Hmmm. I just like this album for some odd reason.

Nada Surf LET GO - just a cool album with loads of memories.

Elliott FALSE CATHEDRALS - also many memories.

Paloalto SELF TITLED - memories and hope.

I knew there was a reason that I liked you! If you check the archives for similar threads, you'll see that Leftoverture always, always, always is at the top of my Desert Island list.

I'll give you my top five for now, because I don't have time to come up with ten before Lost starts.

Kansas - Leftoverture - the best album ever made IMO. Great music, great lyrics, killer album. And, yeah, I'm sick of Carry On, but it's a solid song that's been ruined by classic rock stations that refuse to recognize the greatness of the other tunes on this album.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here - Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Welcome To The Machine. 'nough said.

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust - This album changed my life.

Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production of Eggs - This album excited me in a way that music hadn't excited me in years.

Hem - Rabbit Songs - This CD is my favourite stress reliever. The music, the songwriting, and Sally Ellyson's incredible voice all work together to sooth the savage beast within.

Ziggy Stardust was my first real rock album. I bought it because I liked the cover and it was on sale. It started a life long love affair with Bowie's music. And it forever changed the way that I listened to music and the type of music that I listened to.

Funny, but when Rae was street-teaming :p Folklore (no, not the 16 Horsepower album) I happened to get in a conversation with someone at a record store and described it as The Dismemberment Plan mixed with Shellac. And I thought I was the weird one :D

Since I'm here my DIDs (of the moment):

Spoon - A Series Of Sneaks
    The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I
    Grandaddy - Sumday
Stephen Malkmus - Face The Truth
    Les Savy Fav - Inches
    Pinback - Summer In Abaddon
Super Furry Animals - Rings Around The World
    Radiohead - OK Computer
Sepultura - Chaos AD (need my metal fix)
Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha (Yeah, it's new. Yes, it is that good.)

    NP: Wilco (live boot)

    some really great choices...
I always find myself picking different things when it comes to ...let's say a Desert Island than what I listen to on a day-to-day basis. I think that all of us have our 'sacred' stash of albums that we frequently visit and re-visit, but if I know that I only have a few to listen to for quite some time it becomes a whole different beast. I suppose when I think about it I really want to be able to listen to songs that paint vivid pictures for me and things that are reflective and personal for me. Yet at the same time, songs that don't grow tiresome, which even the best ones do at times.

Well for me, I guess ZIGGY STARDUST was the first album that when I listened to it, at first, was rather average. I skipped through it a bit and found a few tracks that I could enjoy, but then something magical happened. I found myself craving it. It was a rock album that had this beautiful nature to it that nothing else quite had before. It also is the first and only album that I am aware of where songs like IT AIN'T EASY truly sound more like a whole rock choir vs. just one man singing out. It's just an amazing record with such passion and mystery. I, of course, love just about every other Bowie album, but this one I always come back to and each time fall in love again.

Haven't done one of these for a long time...but what the hell

    and, yeah, it's basically impossible

    The Clash: London Calling
Minutemen: Double Nickels on the Dime
    Marvin Gaye: Superhits
    The Upsetters: Super Ape
Duke Ellington & Johnny Hodges: Blues Summitt
    Chuck Berry: Anthology
    Miles Davis: Kind of Blue
    Love & Rockets: Express
    Massive Attack: Protection
    OutKast: ATLiens

or...if we could do box sets (really cheating for this one)

    Clash (Singles Box)
    Stax Collection Vol. 1
Black Box: Wax Trax Box Set
    Hitsville USA Motown Collection
Miles Davis & John Coltrane Columbia Recordings
Beethoven Symphony Box (probably von Karajan's, but not picky)
    Lee Perry: Arkology Box
    Nuggetts (original 4 disc box)
    Massive Attack Singles 90/98 Box
Velvet Underground: Peel Slowly and See Box
No Thanks: The 70s Punk Rebellion Box Set

and, ya know, I'm still missing a bunch of ****.

Let me pretend I had to run to this desert island quickly and didn't have too much time to analyze this or make it perfect; here' an off-the-top-of-my-head list:

The Smiths -- Louder than Bombs
    Velvet Underground & Nico (s/t)
    Jay-Z -- The Blueprint
    Miles Davis -- *****es Brew
Rolling Stones -- Exile on Main Street
Talking Heads -- More Songs About Buildings and Food
David Bowie -- Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders from Mars (I'm sure it was the power of suggestion, but that is an excellent choice)
Billie Holiday -- Love Songs compilation or any other disc of hers I could find from the late 30s or early 40s
Louvin Brothers -- When I Stop Dreaming: The Best of the Louvin Brothers
    Daft Punk -- Discovery

Can't help but notice that this one keeps coming up. I wonder if Bowie and Islands is just a natural thing. Hmmm. Anyway, I am listening to the SACD of ZIGGY STARDUST now because it's been on my brain with this thread. Lovin' the sax....wooot.

Oops, you said no compilations or greatest hits in your "rules". Sorry. Only problem is, when you're picking albums from the "pre-album" era, it is impossible. Louder than Bombs was sort of like its own album. Anyhow, the rules kinda suck for me, but thanks for starting the thread.
