    Cover Compilation

Ok folks, always looking for some great covers.
Wanting to put together 2 cd Cover set and trying to stay away from some of the "obvious". (ie Hendrix doing "Watchtower)
Give me about 5 of your favorite covers.
    Starting with :
    Ben Harper - Sexual Healing
Johnny Cash - Hurt (ok, maybe recently obvious - but GAWD - I think that song may have been MEANT for him)
Ben Harper (again) - Voodoo Child (slight return)
    Los Lobos - Bertha

Minutemen - Have you Ever Seen The Rain (CCR)
    Replacements - Black Diamond (Kiss)
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Dear Prudence (Beatles)
Red House Painters - All Mixed Up (Cars)
If being afraid is a crime we'll hang side-by-side,
at the swingin' party down the line..

I think my next comp is gonna be a covers comp too.

Here's 5 that haven't already been mentioned that are sure to make the cut:

    Oh Well- Joe Jackson
    Kashmir- Kevin Gilbert
    Viva las Vegas- Dread Zeppelin
Tears of a Clown- English Beat
    Crazy- the Kidney Theives

Check out the Moog Cookbook albums too. All covers, all weird.

Weird, I have that, did not realize it's a cover -- who did the original?

Through the Looking Glass -- great album, probably my favourite by them. Actually, that's their covers album, but "Dear Prudence" does not appear to be on it.

A couple of mine -- yes, I, too, am doing a covers compilation:

    Paranoid - Type O Negative
    Purple Haze - Cure
You Really Got Me - Oingo Boingo
Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) - Marilyn Manson

anything by Nine Inch Nails ("Memorabilia" comes to mind as particularly good) or Tori Amos

Little Honda - Yo La Tengo
People are Strange - Echo and the Bunnymen
Sweet Jane - The Cowboy Junkies
    Wild Thing - X

Hey Nobody - Good call on Wayne Hancock's Brand New Cadillac. I almost put that on my last comp, right next to the Backslider's Abe Lincoln, because it references a line from that song.

A bunch spring to mind but most wouldn't be familiar with the originals but these three will work:

Mercury Rev - Isolation (John Lennon)
    Uncle Tupelo - Effigy (CCR)
Jane's Addiction - Rock And Roll (Lou Reed)

Likewise, I've always enjoyed Burning Sensations' cover of "Pablo Picasso" (originally done by The Modern Lovers).

I could go on for days on this one, and also did a covers comp a few years ago, but here are a few of my faves:

Jason and the Scorchers - Absolutely Sweet Marie (Dylan)
Brian Eno - You Don't Miss Your Water (William Bell; also performed by Otis Redding)
Van Morrison - Bring It On Home To Me (Sam Cooke)
    Chemical People - Vacation (Go-Gos)
And the world will turn to flowing pink vapor stew.

    Talking Great Suggetsions Folks....

I'm familiar w/ about 75% of what's been mentioned so far and, for some reason or another, like most if not all of those. Looks like this might become a 3 - 5 disc comp!
    Keep 'em coming and thanks!

Yes, that's the Fleetwood Mac song and yes, Patsy Cline.

Thru the looking glass, yep, I need to pick that up one of these days. Thanks.

    Talking Some of my faves...

    1. "How do you mend a broken heart?" (Bee Gee's) - Covered by Al Green... he slew it!!! Listen to this version and you'll never listen to a "singing mouse" again.

    2. "Walk on by." (Dionne Warwick) - As done by Issac Hayes on "Hot Buttered Soul". Groundbreaking album, groundbreaking treatment. Still listen to it today.

    3. "Georgia on my mind" (Hoagy Carmicheal?) - Ray Charles... when juxtaposed against the flames of the civil rights movement at the time... what more poignant version can you think of?

    4. "America the Beautiful" (Traditional) - Ray Charles again brings a song into the church and makes it his own...

    5. "A little help from my friends" (Beatles) - Joe Cocker live at Woodstock... yeah I heard the scream...

    6. "What's Goin On?" (Marvin Gaye) - Donny Hathaway, "Donny Hathaway Live". Donny on keyboards, Cornell Dupree on guitar, Earl D''ruoen on congas and Willie Weeks on bass... What a rendition.

    7. "Gonna Take a Miracle" (unknown) - Laura Nyro and Labelle on the album of the same name. Patty and the girls with Laura doing an old 60's tune as produced by Gamble and Huff!!!!!

    8. "Smooth Criminal" (Michael Jackson) - Alien Ant Farm may never have another hit, but they slew the hell out of that tune....

    9. " Higher Ground" (Stevie Wonder) - The Red Hot Chili's did this different and did it justice.

    10. "Proud Mary" (Creedence & Fogarty) - Ike and Tina Turner!!!! How could nobody list this the mother of all covers?????!!!!!

That's my top ten for the time being...
