I saw in the paper that ol' Willie Nelson had a few nights off, so he and his "family" are playing tonite & tomorrow in a town not far from here.

Tickets are $70 and up. There's no way in hell I would go see Willie, not because of the ticket prices, but because I know he's jujst gonna play the same old standards. On The Road Again, etc. Yawn. Same with ZZ Top. They're coming out with a brand new disc any day now, but maybe they'll play one or two songs off it, the rest will be La Grange, Tush, bla bla bla.

Why come out with new discs if you're only going to play a few songs off it? Man, this pissed me off to no end, especially guys like Willie, who seem to come out with 2 or 3 albums a years. Borrrring!

Most people are just the opposite, when they go se their favorite band, they want to hear their favorite songs by them. That's why radio is in the shape it is, people like that take the surveys.

Another reason most bands, especially the "classic" to be nice, when they release new material it's rarely up to par with the stuff that made them famous. Also many of these bands pick up new generations of fans who maybe haven't seen the bands best songs in concert before.

I am actually breaking in the new ZZ Top album right now and it is all new, though I use the term "new" loosely. All new songs with much of the same grungy harmony rock and roll that made them famous. So far, it's pretty damn good.

Though it's unfair to lump ZZ Top in with Willie just because ZZ released a few burnout, rehash albums in the 80's. They've been releasing albums consistently since the beginning, though this new one is the first new album for them in 9 years, so you know they've been working on some fresh material.

I saw Skynyrd & ZZ last saturday night. Skynyrd, except for two newer songs and I'm not sure if they are from the latest album, was all 70's radio songs, the crowd didn't seem to mind at all though. ZZ Top did play Gotsta Get Paid but other than that all big radio songs, but ZZ could have played radio songs for a few hours though with their extensive catalog. To me the guys seemed not to be at their best, sounded a bit like a garage band playing their songs. Timing wasn't tight and the guitar player seemed like he lost a bit of talent. Skynyrd was on their game though. Seem like either band should have been able to play their songs in their sleep and not miss a note though

I picked up the new one, too, but the vocals are just awful. Gibbons sounds like he's been gargling with razor blades. All the songs have the same type vocals, where it seems previous albums, they kind of mixed it up a little (and let Dusty sing a little more, too- I can't even see where he's singing on this one).

Not a "classic" ZZ Top disc. I had to drag out their first (oddly called ZZ Top's First Album) to cleanse my palette after hearing the new one.

Hmm. Maybe he's just given up. I have an older DVD where he sings, and you can see here that he's credited with vocals.

Edit: And here's what AllMusic said about Gibbons' singing: ZZ Top have the weathered interplay of vets who've been doing this for almost their entire lives and Billy Gibbons' gravelly growl has now withered into a gnarly, strangled croak, almost primal in its ugliness.
