Another to cross off my bucket list this Friday.

Going to see Sun Kil Moon, the latest moniker used by singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek. I've been a fan of his since 'Red House Painters', and when he released Ghosts of the Great Highway in 2003 under the new name, I continued to follow him and have most of his recordings. Benji, from 2014, was one of my favorites that year and I still play it quite a lot.

His new collaboration is with some British dude named Jesu (Jesu/Sun Kil Moon), so this could be an interesting show. I haven't heard their new release but will probably pick it up at the show.

Anyone else have good shows coming up?

I call my bathroom Jim instead of John so I can tell people that I go to the Jim first thing every morning.

My middle son, now a college junior, mentioned Benji to me one day last year as one of his favorites. I had no idea what to expect, but bought the album with the goal of enticing my son to sit still with me for an hour to listen to it. That plan worked, but had the added benefit of being a very enjoyable listen. Have not read up on him or his catalogue, but plan to check him out further.

The show sucked big time. While I'm glad he's off my bucket list, it was a waste for a Friday night, and the drive to Philly was a mess, taking about 2 hours due to traffic heading into the city.

Mark Kozelek is a very angry man. While I really like his music, first with Red House Painters and now with Sun Kil Moon, he was nearly unwatchable. He come out on stage just after 9 PM (no opening band) and the first 'song' was a rambling dialog of his recent travels in Europe and back to the states, including his arrival in Philly. He had to read the 'lyrics', which were more spoken than sung, from a notebook. He dropped the F bomb frequently and seeming to take pride in it. And this was nearly 40 minutes long!

He did a nice tribute to Leonard Cohen with a cover of Famous Blue Raincoat, along with 'I Love My Father' from the stellar Benji CD. Those were sandwiched around a new one from his collaboration with Jesu (hey zoo), and it was loud and angry, with Mark doing more screaming than singing.

People were leaving throughout the show, and we decided to join them when he did a nasty song about Michael Jackson. Look, I was no fan or MJ nor his (possible) issues with kids, but he's been dead a long, long time. I was also in the mood to hear some of his good tunes and not listen to him cursing and preaching about how we need to love each other, not say the 'N' word that rhymes with trigger, and how politicians lie to us.

He was obnoxious and pretentious, and the showed pretty much sucked the big one. Had he stuck to music and shut his pie-hole, the show might have been tolerable.

Yep. I don't mind a little banter with the crowd, but he was way over the top. I felt like yelling 'SHUT UP AND PLAY SOMETHING' but I'm sure he would have cursed me and the people around me would have been a bit put off. Yeah, never again. Done with this jack-hole.

wow. that's disappointing. I've only been a fan since Among the Leaves, but I feel those releases have been going downhill for similar reasons--too much brain dump rambling. Sorry you had such a terrible night of it.

Lots of stuff out there (on the internets, duh) on what a dick he is. Wouldn't be surprised to hear that he'll play at Trump's inauguration.

Wow. Sorry to hear that. One would hope that a bucket-list band would prove to be worthy of making the list and not someone that you want to walk out on.

It was pretty damned messy. He told us he was really tired and suffering from jet lag, but that was no excuse to be a dick.

My buddy Bob went to see Sloan about a month ago (he had a terrible cold and didn't make this show), and some young guy they met mentioned he'd been to 38 shows this year, and started recounting many of them. Bob told him we were going to see Sun Kil Moon and the guy warned him that it would suck because Mark talks too much!

Bob told me that AFTER this show after I told him how terrible it was. Again, I have thick skin and can handle cursing and so forth, but after that brutal election and all the craziness around it, I just wanted to hear some Sun Kil Moon, not his ranting and raving.

I believe he's a fan of Hillary based on some of his commentary.
