Mural styles: detailed, abstract, on plaster — how to choose yours?

Lately I’ve been thinking about reworking one of the walls in my apartment. A friend recently renovated his place and added a detailed mural with this surreal forest scene, and honestly it changed the whole vibe of his living room. It made me curious because I realized I have no idea how to pick a style that fits my own space. Some people go for super detailed artwork, others prefer something abstract, and I even saw plaster-style murals that look almost sculpted. Last time I tried choosing decor, I overthought everything and ended up doing nothing, so I don’t want to repeat that. How do people figure out which mural style actually matches their personality or the room they’re planning to upgrade?

From my experience, the easiest way to choose is to look at the overall interior aesthetics first and then match the mural style to that mood. When I redesigned my small office room, I thought a detailed mural would overwhelm the space, so I switched to something more abstract with soft shapes. It completely changed how the room feels to work in. If you want a clearer overview of how different styles look in real spaces, this page helped me a lot — feelflow.space — especially when I was trying to visualize how the mural would blend with furniture and lighting. What worked for me was imagining how I wanted the room to “feel,” and the style kind of chose itself from there

Just stopping by because the topic sounded interesting. I’ve noticed that people approach home décor in very different ways — some like bold choices, others stick to minimalism, and some just experiment as they go. It’s cool how murals give so much freedom for personal expression. Even if someone doesn’t end up choosing a mural, exploring different styles usually helps them understand their own taste better.
