    There's a certain wry perfection in that. From Buckle v. Valeo to the recent Shays-Mehan Bill both the courts and Congress have been tapdancing around the issue of "soft money" with both the Republicans and the Democrats laughing their arses to the bank.

    Free Speech isn't free; it costs a lot of money to get out your message. But if you've got the bucks I seems you can convince people of almost anything.

    If you doubt it, check out the amount of advertising you see for cosmetics, personal care products, and that classic of consumer price gouging, cold breakfast cereals. Almost all of the retail cost of these products goes to marketing of one kind or another, while simple or home-made alternatives could be used for a very few pennies on the dollars.

    So it shouldn't surprise anyone that political advertising is effective at persuading the gullible. Ultimately it's the same old problem ...

    And of course if you're an anarcho-capitalist Any Rand devotee, you believe that gullible are fair game and the rich have the right -- indeed, the obligation -- to exploit them.
