    10 Used Cars to Avoid

By Matthew de Paula of MSN Autos

2009 - 2011 Audi Q5: Consumer Reports data, which come from customer surveys, show that owners have had problems with the engine cooling system, power equipment, audio system and squeaks and rattles, among other things.

2007 - 2010 BMW 330i / 335i : 330i and 335i models, which are in the sweet spot of the 3-Series range, have proved so unreliable. Serious problem areas include the fuel system, major and minor engine components, body hardware and audio system.

Chrysler Town & Country / Dodge Grand Caravan : Dodge has sold millions of them, despite their tendency to break down. It doesn't matter what model year, their reliability is terrible across the board, according to Consumer Reports. And it's not just minor things; the transmission, engine components, suspension, brakes and electrical and fuel systems are all problematic.

2009 - 2010 Jaguar XF: The sexy, luxurious and sporty XF is a huge improvement over the S-Type it replaced in 2009. If only it were reliable. Its transmission, drive system and electrical system are among the major components prone to failure.

Jeep Grand Cherokee: The Jeep Grand Cherokee is rugged and can go practically anywhere. At odds with this seemingly indestructible nature is a track record for failure. Both the V6 and V8 models are unreliable, though recent V6 versions have fared somewhat better. Problem spots include the cooling system, climate control system, drive components, brakes, power equipment, body hardware and minor engine parts.

2002, 2006, 2007, 2009 Mercedes-Benz M-Class: It seems incongruous that a high-priced luxury car could be unreliable. The 2006 and 2007 models are particularly bad, according to Consumer Reports. They suffer from major engine problems, faulty electrical systems, broken body hardware, transmission woes and a host of other issues.

MINI Cooper S & Cooper Clubman S:The S engines turbocharged or supercharged, depending on the year are seriously problematic. In addition, transmissions, fuel systems and body parts that squeak, rattle and break will also upset owners.

2009 - 2010 Nissan 370Z :A 2009 redesign of this sporty 2-seater has unfortunately brought a host of problems that didn't exist before, particularly related to the engine and transmission. The drive system, suspension and brakes are also failure-prone.

Volkswagen New Beetle: This cute cult car is a letdown when it comes to reliability. Consumer Reports lacks data for models from 2008 through 2011, but 2007 and older models are riddled with issues. Both hatchback and convertible versions of the New Beetle have so many problems that it's easier to list the areas that are sound: the suspension, brakes, exhaust and climate control system.

2006 Porsche 911: The 2006 Porsche 911 appears to be an anomaly, with problematic electrical and engine cooling systems. It's hard to say for sure whether the 2006 model is alone in its deficiencies.

All stuff known for years in the book "The Lemon Aid" guide available in Canada (but they're the same cars).

Next time you're in Canada stop by Chapters Book stores and get the Lemon Aid book on used cars.

As for Toyota - be careful a lot of models get their worst rating of 1star out of 5 - same for Honda. Some cars from those two get top ratings but it depends.

Hyundai I believe does the best in the inexpensive car categories. But BMW and Mercedes are always rated mediocre or worse.

Wouldn't be easier just to order it online

Toyota have been pretty reliable brand from their track record especially their trucks. But they charge you for it as their cars and trucks are priced higher in the market. IMO Nissan is a better brand in terms of reliabilty and competitive pricing.

And I agree with pick of Jeep Grand Cherokee as one of mentioned used car to avoid. My coworker drives one and almost most of climate control switches are malfunctioning including power windows. And a mysterious fuel system problem that come and goes.

I'll be avoiding these for sure, Smokey: the Porsche 911 for example. Gosh! I was giving it serious considerations.

    Thanks.

I would like to add my very own VW Phaeton W12 to the list. Its a wonderful car when it does not eat thousands at the garage. If you get a monday model be prepared to step back from your hifi Hobby

I once owned a 1974 Pontiac Ventura and it was the only car I have ever owned that did not make it to 100k miles. I was driving and a rear wheel axle started to fall off. I was fortunate enough to pull into a repair shop where an honest mechanic who was familiar with the problems of that car was able to weld everything back together. I also had other major problems with that Pontiac and finally got rid of it with only 90k mile on the car.
I will stick with my Toyota 4Runner as my primary car. I have also had great luck with my Acura's. I also own an Acura RSX that currently serves as a backup car with over 172k miles and no major or even minor problems.

    Geez. A 6 litre, W12 engine with 444 bph.

No temptation here, though. (a) Not sold in Canada, and (b) 'way over top for my needs or pocketbook.

There are a handful of them in Canada. I bought it because of the ride comfort and quietness plus the permanent all wheel drive.
