Panasonic's 150-Inch Plasma Opens CES

Panasonic President Toshihiro Sakamoto kicked off the first official day of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) here with a slew of announcements, including a 150-inch plasma TV.

The 150-inch plasma, dubbed "Life Screen," is now the largest in the world. It boasts 2,000-by-4,000 pixel resolution and is 11 feet wide, or the size of nine 50-inch plasma TVs, Sakamoto said. It features an 8.84 million pixel image resolution.

Two years ago, Panasonic unveiled a 103-inch plasma TV that was, at the time, the largest available plasma TV. It sold 3,000 of the 103-inch plasmas in 2007, Sakamoto said. "Even I was amazed," he said.

He did not announce any pricing information, though the 103-inch plasma retails for $70,000, and reports have put the 150-inch version in the $100,000 range.

Curious...... but I know you pay a lot because it's going to be produced in a limited manner etc.... but isn't the big advantage of Plasma over LCD the fact that it's more of a one time fixed cost that doesn't increase exponentially with size like LCD.... basically wouldn't it cost marginally more to produce a 150 inch vs. say a 70 inch ???? I can see 150 Inches of LCD costing 100K but seriously... this seems a little over the top.......

Maybe for the "average" sizes. This is really a showpiece, not something aimed at the casual market. Frankly, I think (wooch, Sir T help me out), that at that size, it may be more beneficial to use a very high quality projection system.

Just the weight of the glass, and installation issues would seem to make this more of a problem than a real solution to anyone's viewing needs.
