Naim Uniti All-In-One just launched

Naim has just launched the Uniti - a very awesome sounding all-in-one sytem:

It seems Naim really is trying to keep up with the times. It's not cheap but when you consider that you can use it as Integrated Amp, tuner, CD Player and streaming Music Server, it's very reasonably priced (by audiophile standards anyway)...

Isn't that just a Receiver/CDP (aka NAD Neo, Music Hall Trio, etc.) with a hard drive? Throw in an LCD and you've got a laptop!

I'm hesitant to invest in any "combo" unit where one of the components is mechanical in nature. If the CD player goes and can't be (or is too expensive to be) repaired, t'll gnaw at the owner forever more. I know it would me.

Looking at the dimensions, that thing is pretty big. It does look like a bargain when you look at the price of Naim equipment.

Yep... that's always a good point to keep in mind, when considering an all-in-one unit....

I'd never touch an all-in-one. If one part breaks, the whole thing has to go to the shop.

And, of course, there are very limited upgrade options. I regretted the last integrated amp I bought for this reason, though amp integration makes more sense than most combos.

These "All-N-1" units must be selling though, several manufacturers offer them, Linn, Arcam, T+A, NAD, Shanling, to drop names. To further make things more difficult, how would you like to sell the Shanling which is SET with only 3 wpc? Despite the draw backs these would be great for office or bedroom setups.

That is a very popular use for these setups: second systems, where space is a premium...

Also with the whole flat TV and small speaker craze, a lot of people want small all-in-one systems instead of bulky seperates... While guys like us on AR still get excited at the prospect of a rack system or hulking monoblocks, the general public does not....

Is it just me, am I behind the times, or is the computer going to take over the stereo industry...With naim makin' DACs for comps, etc., what's next? Tube Comps for audiophiles? Will my monitor need isolation feet? Will should I get monoblock mainframes?

Not if they were counting on me. Companies have to try products they think will sell and many here on AR and I'm sure others in the hobby fully embrace the hard drive as their digital source. Me personally I do not want to monkey with any computer stuff when i want to listen to my music. There are a lot of USB DAC's becoming available which is interesting since one sector of the computer biz seems intent on making them the size of a credit card.

What I'm waiting to see is when Naim finally decides to release just the Music Streamer/DAC section of the Uniti... since persons who already own say a Nait 5i would be a good market for that product...
