Physical disc still the king

Despite all the buzz surrounding Netflix and prediction that soon one in three Americans will have a Netflix subscription, twice as many people watch movies and TV shows on DVD/Blu-ray Disc than on VOD subscription.

In a three-month survey of entertainment trends through March 31, NPD found that 59% of respondents watched a movie on network TV — the same percentage that watch a movie on DVD or Blu-ray Disc.

Another 44% watched a movie in a theater; 36% from a DVR; 21% from a rental kiosk, 20% from an ad-supported multichannel video program distributor; 19% from a SVOD service and 13% from a transactional VOD service.



For the TV shows, the percentage of respondents watching a primetime network or cable channel program increased to 81% and 65%, respectively.

Another 42% of respondents watched a recorded TV show; 30% watched a TVDVD or Blu-ray box set; 18% via ad-supported pay TV channel; 16% via SVOD; 15% from ad-supported streaming service; 5% via transactional VOD; and 2% from Internet-based VOD rental service.



In the past 12 months, 44% of consumers purchased a movie on DVD or Blu-ray. Compare that to the numbers who are using VOD to rent or own. Another 25% rented from a kiosk; 14% from pay-per-view channel; 5% bought a digital copy of a movie, and just 4% bought a digital copy of a TV show.

I would think that this is because there are still a lot of people out there that grew up using physical media and still have problems believing that online or stored media on computers can match the quality of physical media or they just plain like the tactile feel of having something physical in their hands and putting it in a player. Whichever that case is I am a person that likes both as I use both in my system and I have my system set up so that music server sounds as good or better than from a disk but it does take some know how in order to do this.

IMO both factors are stilll valid when it comes to physical media vs digital download.

I still don't think online or stored media on computers can match the quality of physical [video] media in terms of picture quality. The compression algorithm used in the former media will degrade picture quality.

And movies are still commodity, so most poeple prefer have it on physical media rather than have it stores on a cloud or computer
