It's like nothing we've ever done before
I just got this in my inbox - should we be scared, frightened, delighted or apprehensive?

    Anyone care to speculate?

    They're going to show us:

    a) the latest 80 year old patent they've just bought out and tout as their own research.

    b) a list of publications they're suing for liable for posting actual measurements of review gear

    c) a list of small speaker companies they're mailing cease and desist letters to for using the terms 'folded horn', 'transmittion line' or 'bass module'.

    d) a list of audio-related publications they've pulled advertising from because a reviewer gave their product a bad review.

    ...prolly just a)

    GOOD ONE.
No, "iwave", more like a piece of crap. You know the ROMANS (or anyone with a
megaphone) has used the principles behind the wave P.O.S, right?:1:

Wow. Here's the link to Bose's web site.

$5,349?! Are they serious? I guess Bose didn't get the memo that there's a recession going on.

good god! Thats probably a 600dollar type screen. .50 cents per woofer and .25 on the mids and tweets combined. Maybe 35 dollar(i know on the high side.) amp...For over five grand they could have at least used a 85 or so inch screen. and Kevlar drivers. and Be tweeters. At least.

It's an even sweeter deal (NOT!) if you live in Canada. Bose.ca shows the price as $6,349. That's $1,000 more than the US price. But based on today's currency exchange, the equivalent of the US price should be $5,683. So where are they getting the extra $665 from???

I guess when you're only going to sell a half dozen of something a year, you have to build in a big profit margin.

That's standard. Canadians are ripped off every day in every way based on exchange rates; (books and magazines are a notorious example: typically 20% above US$). The main rational is volitility: the Canadian $ bobs up & down with the price of oil.

The Bose price for this POS is consistent with the Bose practice of over-priced product. But still you continually hear the average Joe tell you that "Bose is the best sound I've heard" or words to that effect.

Now that you see the details, the application is pretty interesting. For those with limited space or more haute-couture sensibilities over having large speakers, subs and wiring, it will likely be a success. It employs a couple of previous Bose concepts: six small woofers firing into a transmission line along with multiple tweeters arrayed on the back edge of the screen for invisibility and indirect radiation for enhanced "spaciousness". Here are some videos including one on the sound system.

Bose usually has interesting concepts.... They've specialized in addressing a market that most HiFi brands ignore; People who really hate the look of electronics...

This TV is a good idea, but as always the question is really whether the aesthetics, sound and image quality will in anyway justify the heavy price tag....

For those in the "know", no. Nevertheless, I still suspect it will be a runaway success because of the convenience and cosmetics. More importantly, other makers may decide that they should do more than putting two wimpy little speakers on a mid-sized TV that most likely will run standalone. Let the competition begin!

Agreed... I hope it encourages other manufacturers to upgrade the speakers they include on TVs....

I've already acknowledged that you can buy more for your $5349. They are shrewd in that they offer monthly payments for most of their products that tends to gloss over the high package cost. Much like the question asked of car buyers, "So what monthly payment can your afford?" For them, it has always been a matter of marketing the value of convenience and simplicity over low cost.

I seriously doubt that twelve or eighteen one inch drivers can provide the kind of low end than six woofers in a transmission line can provide. Unlike, the Mitsu, all of the speakers are completely hidden (hint: woo women buyers with nice purses) and the unit provides an iPod dock. In any event, Bose has proven they understand a particular market segment and I think this unit will sell quite well. Say what you will, but Amar has been laughing all the way to the bank for a long time. :)
