Speakers in HT, going from big to small.

Thanks for the responce so far, I was hoping for a bit more tips on the options out there.
I'm aware that the sound quality will suffer with satelites, but the aim of this thread is to get a focus on whats decent out there in the price/size range, avoiding the bad picks and highlighting the top performers.
So far I got a few tips from friends:

No reason for sound quality to suffer from sat/sub system.
Did you know that the sub-sattelite system started out as an audiophile idea?
THE IDEA WAS TO PUT THE BASS IN ONE SPEAKER (A SUB) since bass is largely
omni-directional. Then the sats could put out better midrange since they didn't have to
chug bass. That was the idea, anyway.
I have heard a lot of sub/sat systems that sound great
