Orientation of four in-ceiling (I know, I know) surround speakers in a 7.1 setup...

First thing I'm going to say is I'm very excited yet very depressed at the same time...we are moving into a brand-spankin-new house in 7 months (yay!) but because of the wife factor, the surrounds have to be in-ceiling ...she would go for in-walls but there is nowhere to put them (two large windows behind seating area - which sucks the big one as well)...see doesn't even want my beautiful Hsu sub sitting out

So I know I should try to get ones where I can angle the tweeter a bit but my question is:

How far apart should the side speakers and also the rear speakers be? I would think the sides should be the same distance apart as the fronts and the rears should be closer together...is this logical? If my sides are 8 feet apart what should the rears be? And should I even bother with 7.1 considering I have to use in-ceiling?

    Cool

I never saw much use for anything more than 5.1 myself, when I had
a 6.1 system (two rear center speakers) It hardly made a difference.
How far apart those rears are isnt that important, but try to get them as far apart as those fronts.
And grow a little backbone, okay?
When did the women take over in this country, anyway?
This is why DLP is doomed, and flat screens are taking over the world,
because of the WAF(wife acceptance factor).
I would hate to see this country invaded, WE CAN'T EVEN STAND UP TO OUR WIVES.
If any woman of mine said that its the sub or me, I WOULD TELL HER THAT I AM GOING TO MISS HER, and dont forget the dog, cat, kids,
and her deadbeat brother on her way out.
You are compromising on the inwalls, let her compromise on the sub,
let her put a lace dolly on it or something.

The biggest thing is you do not want your in-ceiling speakers too close to the corner, typically, the speakers should be placed about 1/3rd of the distance from the corner of the room to the center of the wall. If possible, avoid locating the speakers less than two feet away from the corners of the room.
And, you may ask your wife to reconsider as a woman who is extremely home interior aware, there is no substitute in a home theater for a powered sub - if you are going to spend all this money on a flat screen, receiver, speakers, and then compromise on the one thing that truly brings a movie alive?...just not practical.
    good luck

    What "family"?
MOST so called "men" today are so scared of their wives, usually of being "cut off" from the goodies.
They havent figured out that half the planets population has these "goodies".
Older men have to have a place (usually a workshop) to get away from the women, tell lies and smoke cigarettes.
My buddy picked a HT instead of a workshop, because, according to him, "its kinda hard to watch terminator movies and porno" on
    a table saw.
Younger men still havent figured out that women are full of it.
Another friend of mine was scared of his wife for years, until he figured out that nobody else would want her fat ass.
Its all about intimidation, and women are master intimidators.
A 'marriage" is composed of two people, and involves compromise.
SHE GETS THE "INWALL" monstrosities, he gets a HSU sub, not, she gets everything and he gets a little every once in awhile, which hes entittled to ANYWAY
As for "no replacement for a powered sub" dont waste your time, women dont care, the dont like it "loud", dont care about HT, especially
expensive HT, since that money they could be using to buy another
couple of hundred pairs of identical black slingbacks(shoes), which is
way more important, since its for HER.
Try setting up a couple of dozen systems for friends, women can think of a zillion things that would be more important, all things they
    want.
There are two types of human society, one is matriacly, where women
run things, another is patriacy, where women let the men pretend they run things

His wonderful, loving and respectful relationship with those around him simply flows from his positive, uplifting, cheerful, posts here.

Actually, it seems to me that the only time he has to worry about "being cut off from the goodies" is when his hand cramps up.

    Wauuuugh

    I can't resist.

    1. Pix ain't all wrong. Unless she's making ALL the money, paying for the new house, is a super model/ex - porn star AND is a Cage Fighting champeen, she must compromise.

    2. As for the goodies, embargo's only work if there is NO OTHER SOURCE FOR SAID GOOD COMMODITY OR SERVICE!. As my ole daddy used to say "it's a poor rabbit only got one hole to run to." Any woman, even my ole lady, tells me no long enough I say fine. "One monkey don't stop no show."

    3. I fully believe in treating women as "equals" BUT that doesn't equate to me being treated like a slave or a doormat. Simple.

    4. My ole lady hated the Ohm Walsh F's (pyramids belong in egypt, NOT the living room), fine, I found a moder slim line (Platinum Audio Studio 3's) that she AND I could live with. But THAT is as far as it went.

Do not confuse compromise with surrender. Everyone has a line, he just ain't found his yet.

Mr Dawg's line may just be somewhere else. Maybe he has insisted on a $25,000 motorcycle and is willing to bend on his HT system a little. It's his call to make.

One of the reasons that I have been able to get most anything HT wise we can afford, is because I sold my Harley to afford quartz countertops in her kitchen.
We don't know what he's giving and taking in his deals.

    All righty then!

I ditto TriMe's excellent guidelines. In ceiling surrounds should work fine if you are careful about placement. Perhaps there is a way the sub could be incorporated in a visually appealing manner. Wifey and I were watching a home improvement "shootout" the other night between two designers tasked improve the looks and functionality of a family's arrangement. One eyesore was a big dog kennel that resided in the family room. Vern Yip found a way to hide it under a skirted table. Perhaps a similar method can be found to camouflage the sub.

I think MarkW pretty much summed up the rest.

While you're throwing out the two-bit words, try "Misogynist" on for size. I'm sure it comes in your size.

Also, she fied a couple of lawsuits and won a bunch of money. It's too bad she couldn't sue someone to clear her public reputation. IMNSHO, she rates right up there with Judas Iscariot as far as betraying a trust goes, not that Monica is akin Jesus or anything.

Nah, I'm still hapilly married to that beautiful Brazilian lady you and your lovely wife met.

But, I'm afraid that my playing with pixie here is pretty much over.

In virtually all forums I've participated in, one could rank on the other members to their heart's content but wives and children are off limits. ...and his response was to a post that wasn't even directed at him!

Sometimes. I'm amazed at how low class pix really is and how desperate he can get in order to "score a point" and I refuse to sink to his level.

He doesn't seem to know any better. Try to forgive him. After all, he has to live with himself every day. That should be punishment enough.

That would be a lot of sinking.

And, no, she doesn't have any sisters!

Seriously, it's purely economics and an opportunity just presented itself here that may force me to remain until middle/late '10 at the earliest. Maybe another Texas visit around Xmas? But, then again, as youi may know, these amount to basically a whirl-wind tour.

But hey. there's always the vacations, and I may need more to do what I need to do. Now that the Bahamas bug has bitten again, that's a serious conflict. Not enough time to do all I want...

I'm in the early planning stages for a vacation up at a friend's shore house in Seaside next summer. A week maybe two, and I don't think your house is too far away. I'll pull the mufflers off my car so you'll have some advance warning. Maybe Mr. & Mrs. GM could come down from the mountains and... Party at Mark's house!!!
