Interesting... -15db is pretty loud and I find my average listening to be -27 to -20 most of the time. I went to -11db before and and it wasn't overpowering. Now with the stereo, it seeems much louder at -30db than movies. I was concerned that I hooked my speakers up wrong or something. Now I use Ascend Acoustics CBM-170's for my mains.

    http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages...m170specs.html

It says they are 8ohms...all I did was plug them up and go! I did read in the manual there is an ohm switch, but I never went in to it too much. Is there a switch I need to be hitting? I don't know if anyone else here has a yamaha receiver and these mains!

I am reading it from the online manual now. Perhaps I need to make an adjustment to the impedance selector.

Go to this link, and look at page 27

    http://www.yamaha.com/yec/customer/manuals/HTR_5760.PDF

I don't really understand what this is saying. Anyone wanna help?

    Switch position Left:

If you use one set (A or B) the impedance of each spaeker must be 4ohms or higher.
If you use two setes of (A or B) the impedenace of each speaker must be 8ohms or higher.

    Switch Position Right:

If you use one set (A or B) the impedance of each spaeker must be 8ohms or higher.
If you use two setes of (A or B) the impedenace of each speaker must be 16ohms or higher.

From the specs of my speakers, it looks like the switch SHOULD be in the RIGHT position. I have NO clue which position the switch is in. I never touched this option. Perhaps some of you Yamaha guys might be able to tell me what way the switch is by default. Perhaps the switch is on the middle (if possible) meaning neither? The reason I am asking is that I am at work for the next 8 hours!: This may explain some of the results I am getting perhaps. or I am just not use to the new receiver.

Source (ie: cd player vs. dvd player) can have a big impact on the apparent volume you are getting.

Chances are your receiver is set to the 8 ohm or higher selection (Right)

I'm not sure what your complaint is exactly, what "results" are you getting that you aren't happy with?

I am trying to find out what yamaha users average listening level is. Someone posted the yamaha facts for the volume. I have it on -27 to -25 for tv, and during a movie I put it on -15 and it doesn't seem extremely loud at all. I feel like the receiver isn't powerful or something. I know I had an old 1998 receiver, but when I turned up the receiver it turned up what appears to be bass and everything. When I turn out this receiver, it doesn't really feel like it's pushing that much. I dunno... maybe I am just not use to new technology and I have been listening to a messed up setup.

I do not have a sub yet, but I do not notice much of a change in bass from the mains during volume being turned up.

What I did just notice is that I have tone control on bypass. That just may have something to do with it. I never read what the feature did, but I wasn't under the impression it turned off. Figured it adjusts to YPAO or something. This could have a large impact on my listening. I think I also have this night mode thingy which narrows the range of sorts for night listening. It seems that plugging it up wasn't the way to go !

I think you should take the time to familiarize yourself with the manual, and all of the setting. Don't just count on YPAO to do all of the settings for you.

That receiver is fairly powerful, and you shouldn't be having much of an issue. I have a feeling the problem is with your other equipment, possibly the settings. If TV and CD listening are fine for you in the -30 to -27 dB range, increasing to -15 dB to acheive the same volume might be something to look at. That's a heck of a difference.

That night listening mode seems to have a lot to do with the symptoms I am experiencing.

"when watching a films to reduce the dynamic range of film soundtracks and makes the dialog easier to hear at lower volumes". I have this on for movies, not music... so thats why turner is louder than dvd perhaps. I also noticed the lack of bass, flatness of sorts... thats because the tone control - bass/treble is bypassed. I know for a fact I have tone control on bypass and night listening mode on. So it seems there is an explaination for the weakneses I thought were a problem. If you are an old person watching movie at night this would be fine. I cannot wait to get home and make a few changes to this puppy. I knew it wasn't the receiver, I knew it had to be a setting somewhere.

When I said music, I was referring to turner not cd player. I play music cds on my dvd player also, but was referring to tv, over tuner.

Well I corrected those things, and I dunno. During movies I find myself turning the volume to -15db and -10db. Does anyone else listen their movies at these levels? I checked everything else, all is in order. I am currently running ONLY L+R Mains, and Center channel. This wouldn't be the cause would it? I wouldn't think adding more speakers would make it that much louder.

I had was using Doby Digital options selected and or DTS... but didn't have optical/digital cables, but was using regular RCA interconnects... would this perhaps cause the system not to sound too good?
