    Winter Themed Movies

As we exit one of snowiest winter on the record and cabin fever about to subside, we are more in tuned with our favorite winter movies.

    Not in any particular order:

Dead of Winter (1987): In Hitchcock's style suspence, an actress audition turns deadly in cold upstate new york mansion. With Roddy MacDowall.

Never Cry Wolf (1983): A biologist without any survival skills, seek desperate measure (including eating rat) to study wolves in their environment.

Runaway train (1985): Jon Voigh as a convict on a runaway train heading for wreck in Alaska wilderness.

Nobody’s Fool (1994): Paul Newman try to make a living in a snowy town away from family squabble.

Gold Rush (1925): Charles Chaplin snow bound in mountain cabin, try to make a meal out of a shoe.

Death Hunt (1981): Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin faceoff in Canada wilderness.

The Thing (1982): John Carpenter version of Aliens set in Antarctic. With Kurt Russell.

Die Hard 2 (1990): Bruce Willis's Christmas eve plans does not include chesnut and Eggnog.

Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989): As Griswold had some disastrous vacations at both Wallyworld and in Europe, they hope for smoother vacation at home.

The Shinning (1980): A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter.

I think The Day After Tomorrow would be a good movie for this winter season. Nothing like another ice age to chill folks out.

See also, the far superior, Stalingrad-based, sniper duel Enemy at the Gates.

It is so poorly equipped that every pair of soldiers is given a single rifle--the second man only gets the weapon when the first is cut down. Trapped in no man's land between the opposing armies, Russian recruit Vassili Zaitsev (Jude Law) finally acquires a rifle from Political Officer Danilov (Joseph Fiennes). Danilov is astonished when Zaitsev picks off several German officers. On their return to the Russian lines, Danilov writes about Zaitsev's exploits in the army newspaper. Zaitsev is assigned to a sniper unit. He kills more German officers and, thanks to Danilov, becomes a hero. In retaliation, the Germans bring in sharpshooter Major König (Ed Harris) from Berlin--to hunt Zaitsev. The two snipers engage in a desperate duel, as the appalling Battle of Stalingrad rages. In ENEMY AT THE GATES, director Jean-Jacques Annaud uses a palate of dull greens, blues, and greys to tell the powerful, true story of Russian sniper Vassili Zaitsev. The film is distinguished by fine performances from Law, Fiennes, Rachel Weisz as a female soldier, and Bob Hoskins as Nikita Khrushchev--with Harris particularly notable as the chilly, aristocratic König.

    Directed by Frank Marshall
Starring Josh Hamilton, Ethan Hawke, John Haymes Newton, Bruce Ramsay, Vincent Spano
This is the first mainstream film to deal with the harrowing true story of a Uruguayan rugby team whose plane crashed in the Andes mountains in October of 1972 and who were forced to resort to cannibalism to survive more than two months of isolation. (The only other film to tackle the subject, Rene Cardona's Survive! was a seedy little mess that delighted in exploiting the cannibalism aspect.) The events depicted are primarily based on the novel of the same name by Piers Paul Read. The interview-style prologue features an uncredited John Malkovich as one of the survivors, whose spiritual ruminations on the disaster

Winter Kill (1974) - starring Andy Griffith as you've never seen him before...well actually, quite like you've seen him before. He plays the small town sheriff of a mountain lake town investigating a string of murders. It actually was not half-bad; its remote locale gives it a sense of isolation which hightens the suspense it would have otherwise lacked in just a rural setting.
