Adult Animation TV Shows

I think the best compliment one can give to a animation show would be that viewer forget show is animated and treated it as live human being situations. The question is which one following animated show did it best, and entertain us meanwhile.

I am torn between Flintstone, Simpsons and King of Hill. Each of series have its own memorable episodes, but overall I go with King of Hill as my most favorite adult animated show in dealing with everyday situations.

Not in any particular order:

Family Guy: Animated version of Married with Children.


Flintstone: The first animated series to be shown entirely on Prime time.


American Dad: A paranoid CIA agent try to cope with everyday life.


Simpsons: The most popular animated show and most influential.


Beavis and Butthead: They showed the coolest music video along with their own commentary.


Futurama: A NYC pizza delivery boy find employment in future interplanetary delivery company.


King Of the Hill: A divorcee military barber Bill, paranoid bugman Dale and gibberish spouting Boomhauer round up the cast of Hill’s family.


The Jestsons: Animated characters tackle the future family problems.


The Critic: Voiced by Jon Lovits, it revolve around the life of movie critic Jay Sherman.


South Park: Foul-mouthed fourth-graders deal with with problems their own way.

Anyway, the Flintstones and the Jetson's get my vote. I know I can only vote for one, but I grew up with both and the Flintstones especially were, without a doubt as much a part of my young life as any TV show I watched back then.

The Flintstone was the inspiration for this thread since that is only of mentioned animated shows I have on DVD. The picture quality is simply fantastic.

I grew up with the Flintstones and Jetsons but prefer the Simpsons for it's modern day laugh at society and close to the way things really are.

For realism, I guess I'd have to say King of the Hill. Even though I don't really like the show. But for humour, definately Family Guy. I love that show. I have no idea how they get some of the gags past the censors!

Yeah, Hank sort of put a new spin on "I'll kick yur ass".

A lot of good shows. I grew up with the Flintstones and Jetsons as well. Good clean fun. Love the Simpsons. I love the wit of The Critic.

My vote went to South Park. The show raised the bar on everything. It makes me laugh out loud while being as political as anything I can think of. Some of the parity and skits are brilliant.

Futuroma got a new lease on life from Comedy Central but I can't seem to get into it.

I voted for Futurama because I genuinely think it was the funniest, but The Flintstones is probably the "most treasured" of the group owing to its nostalgic value. The "forgot it was animated" poll question doesn't really fit for any of them I don't think, so I was just going with enjoyment factor :-p

Now that the state of Texas has rejoined the Union (Welcome Back) it's time to clear up a couple of things.

1. I've asked Smoke to wash that hat and shave that beard for years now... ain't a gonna happen. In the Army we'd a given him a real G.I. scrubbin'!!!

2. An incomplete pool. Two show's missing. "Johnny Quest".

3. "Batman the Animated Series." was also on prime time briefly.

The Flinstones while iconic were only a poor man's version of "The Honeymooners" with more goofieness. Using the birth of Pebbles as a ratings gimmick was one thing. Bam Bam and the Great Gazoo??? When it jumped the shark it really jumped the Shark.

The Simpson's would have to be an obvious choice in that they're not only of the culture but have transformed popular culture. Like a virulent fungus they've spread to all corners of the world and infected everything.

South Park is the most fearless show in Television History. Their attacks on all that is hypocritical is what separates them from the herd. Recent events in the Vatican have also proven them to be strangley prescient as well.

Off the choices offered, I'd have to go with The Simpsons.

The Flintstones on the other hand is a pure classic. I remember watching this show when I was a kid and there is not an episode that I haven’t seen. Extra points for anybody who remembers Fred’s name when he was in a pro-race?

I would not say it jump shark as much as it deviate from adult theme toward younger audienece. The first two seasons were aimed toward adult as Fred and Wilma appeared in several black and white television commercials for Winston cigarretes. But as you said it, after the second season its target audience shifted.

But on a side note, must admit that watch South Park when I find it on cable. The foul laungage and taboo subject matter is refreshing change from mostly tamed animation shows.

I remember Duckman, now that you mention it. I used to watch that as well. i think it came on the USA network. I wonder if they put any of those to disc.

My favorite adult cartoon is, sadly, not on this list. It was Duckman, an intelligent, edgy and crass series of the mid-nineties that died way before it should have.

Duckman is on DVD at Amazan, but for hefty price of $32 which you will get two season of that show.

Duckman along with Johnny Quest are probably two of animated shows that I have not seen, or don't remember too much of. It seem animated shows need a little bit of warming up to before one becomes fan. If I see a bit of it here and there will probably cauase it to escape under my radar if I didn't watch the whole show.

Thanks Smokey. Johnny Quest occasionally still comes on Boomerang, an affiliate of Cartoon network that plays older cartoons. They also play the Jetsons and Flintstones. Johnny Quest is an action/adventure type cartoon. My first introduction to Sci Fi as a kid.

I guess I missed the boat here, thinking for a moment that this forum was an appreciation of adult-oriented animated shows...my mistake. Yes, absolutely, Johnny Quest was a real stand out, and in my book ranks among the best shows produced. Its rendering and storyboard were top-rate, and paved a path of quality that was seldom approached.


A lot of credit ought to be given to animator Doug Wildey, whose razor-edge artwork was a real departure from some of the fare that was seen on most of Saturday morning TV. By the way--and Jana of the Jungle fans, here?

I liked Bender the Robot and as such I liked Futurama as a whole. But to me, the overall winner is not on the list; ROBOT CHICKEN which got to me the most perverted animated satire that has ever been on the air IMHO.

Duckman was AWESOME!!! But since it wasn't a choice, I voted for The Critic.
I don't watch much TV now, but one of my favorite cartoon right now (for me) is Archer.
