DVD recorder/player?

Hello all, Is it possible to buy a good or even great DVD recorder/player for around $1k? What features should I look for? Should it have HD capabilities because I'm going to buy an HD TV someday? I don't know anything about them (I'm still using a VCR). Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Michael

My JVC VHS has eaten it's last video tape, i want a DVD recorder with an HD and i hear you can burn a dvd as well with them. What are good models to look at? There is a lot i'm not sure of, like Tivo it sells for $150 but why would i want to pay $300 for auto tv listing? I can see this if you have 500 cable channels but i only have regular tv. Another kick in the pants, not to long HDDVD will be in the main stream so would buying a Tivo to use as a video recorder be better choice?
