The Marantz SA8001 is playing in the other room. I will be back there very soon. Initial impressions better bass extension, more powerful bass, greater dynamics and more drive to the music. More body sound to vocalists and violin in SACD too wonderful. More later.

Yeeeahh boooyyeee, that's what I'm talkin' bout. Congrats on the new gears John! I have the feeling that this player and that format, along with a steady diet of redbook and vinyl, are gonna keep you a happy camper for a while.

Just think of it. There's a whole catalogue of four thousand or so SACDs to explore and one of the only possible upgrades looks a little somethin' like this:

    Enjoy my friend...

As good a player as the Marantz CD5001 is for the money the SA8001 is superior with cd playback. This makes me happy because I was worried that the SA8001 might sound much like the CD5001 but with SACD capability. This is of course not the case. The SA8001 is truly in a class or two above the CD5001.

Bobsticks that Krell looks nice. I will remember it when I am ready to upgrade. By that time I might be able to afford it on Audiogon.

The 8001 is well worth the money. I cant see how Marantz can sell it for so little.

    John!!!!! Congrats on your purchase.

I knew it was going to happen sooner or later, but Wow. That kinda came out of nowhere. There are tons of classical music out there, but much like every formats, there are terrible recordings on SACD. I think we need a forum dedicated to SACD and that other shiny format...

I tell you what's cool about SA8001, and I just noticed this like 2 secs ago.
The remote controls my BAT preamp(UP, Down, Mute), and I never programmed anything into it.

Anyhow, enjoy your new toy my good friend. Oh BTW, could you please stop upgrading? You are really starting to tick off some of members here. LOL.

    Peace out.

I suspect Basite is going to post here in about a week with his tricked out European Marantz SACDP.

That was tongue planted firmly in cheek John. The Marantz is a beauty and hopefully you'll have many moons before ever even thinking about a new machine.

Congrats John! I often wondered the same thing myself as I used to have a CD5001. Thanks for the comparison, it will definitely help, since the SA8001 is high up on my list of potential CD players for when I eventually rebuild my 2 channel setup...

About $1,000. Seriously it uses the same chip set. Maybe better build quality and higher spec components.

Hey JM, your description of the vocals and music with the 8001 in SACD was dead on.
The music was more vibrant and life like. For a $750 CDP its simply amazing. I wish I could have kept both the 8001 and the 840c. Maybe next year I will purchase another 8001.

    My qualified Oppo comments

Please understand that my usage of the Oppo 980H is limited. First, the reason I bought it was to replace my HT system's Samsun universal that died a premature death; my HT includes only a 27" CRT TV. Secondly, I use the HT only for HT and occasional multi-channel SACD listening.

Consquently my review 980H review is pertty limited. The unit was promptly delivered by Oppo in good condition. The unit looks well, but not lavishly, built and has a well-designed remote. All operations are smooth and it has adequate bass management and time delay facilities although I let my receiver handle these. The on-screen display for SACD does not show the album or song text -- this is a gratuitous oversight in my opinion. The sound for the SACD is fine, at least as good my late, lamented Samsung; I haven't listened to CD. Of course, it's impossible for me to seriously judge the video or up-conversion capabilities on my CRT.
