Hey Pops is that Joni Mitchell album a tribute to Charles Mingus? If it is I may have to pick that one up.

Yes it is and it's amazing. Make sure you get it on vinyl, sounds fantastic.

This is actually a collaboration with Mingus, and features Shorter and Hancock.

Picked this one up recently. Lawdy, lawdy, its a fun one. As said on popmatters.com "...we’ve got a lean, mean beat machine, playing a buzzy, swaggering brand of electro-ghetto-funk and Southern hip-hop"
There's a bit of everything packed into a diverse collection of thumping 3 minute bundles of adventurous party music. Just about every track (15 in all) is a collaborative song featuring a different New Orleans artist. Taken as a pile of singles, it's a gold mine. A little overwhelming as an album though. I'm not usually one to go all bass heavy with my music, and I think I have a fairly capable system. However, putting this album on loud for a first listen, I really really wanted to hear it on a mammoth system with clarity and oomph. Got some quality drumming behind the beats with Stanton Moore; even got my white butt wanting to move.

And I think its time I say something about these little gems. A friend of mine sent me these so I could take a listen. I've had them for about a little over a month and all I can say is wow! These are Mordaunt-Short Avanti 902i.
For such a small budget stand mount these have such incredible sound all around. I mean these pupies are very well balanced. There is no part of the sound that is recessed. And its a very good sound at that. I had to keep looking up at the speaker to make sure they are really as small as they are because the sound stage is huge....no joke. to take a listen, you wuld think its a larger speaker.
Excellent tweeters with good reach with out being ear bleed. Nice and lively, Very pronounced but not over powering mids, and a nice and robust and full bottom end. It handles everything I bring to the Musical Fidelity CDP, Marnatz SACDP or MH TT. I can't say to much here because of the wrong thread, but if any one can still find these in production new or on the used market, you should get a pair with no hesitation. They are fun....and what I really like, they give you very good emotion and romance. I love that in a speaker....not sterile. I have a pair of the bigger Paradigm stand mounts 3se mini in my home theater in the basement that these things just walk all over.

All the reissues on vinyl seems to have been from 2008. The used copies at Amazon stamped 1971 go from $6 bucks all the way up to $125 dollars like new Japan pressing 1971. And the only one that was never opened goes for $193.76 release date 1971.

Actually, LPs that were originally a gatefold, are generally reissued as a standard jacket. That's a pretty good indicator.
From that point, check the back of the cover, or the label and often a third party company will be listed.
After that, you can check the run out groove/outter label for production numbers and check them.
Anyhow, I'm sure it sounds great. I have a re-issue of Benson's White Rabbit which sounds nice, but I do miss the gorgeous gatefold jacket that CTI issued.
Mr Peabody
08-14-2010, 09:52 AM
Isn't 1971 the copyright date? I bought the LP in the mid 80's. I always assumed it was a reissue since the cover doesn't fold out. Maybe it's just another run of the original but packaged cheaper.

This is Mozart's Requiem, K 626, as performed by the Adacamy of Ancient Music as directed by Christopher Hogwood. I bought this disc a couple of years ago, having heard snippets of it here and there and my burning curiosity could not quench the burning chords from my head. For listeners who have no familiarity with the Acadamy, the musicians are first rate players of period instruments who play them in the idiom of thier time. Unlike most contemporary performances that are played on correspondingly modern instruments, the Acadamy assiduously strives to perform in the manner that was originally performed. Some of these performances may seem a bit coarse to some listeners, who are unaccoustomed to such craft; but for those who are willing to listen and get involved with the music, these performances are masterpieces whose import will be valued long after Hogwood and the rest of us have "shuffled off this mortal coil".

The performance this disc is nothing less than sumptuous. The choir is large, and all the players lift thier voices in a plaint that reaches its zenith with verve. The notes just soar above and around the room like wispy spirits that will not for a moment be stilled. In similar fashion, the instrumentation is bold and abundant. This is not a funeral for the faint-hearted; this is the last gasp a dying man who will not go quickly or quietly. The staging of the performance is wide and deep, it is beautifully recorded, and not one note is issued forth that does not glisten like a sparkling gem.

The history of this piece is as fascinating as the performance itself, including the fact that although Mozart is credited, he did not write the entire piece. This surmise has been hotly discussed by many musical scholars, who note Mozart's wife Constance's parcelling the composition to others who continued to work on the piece when Mozart was unable to do so.

In sum, the Acadamy of Ancient Music's rendition is a riveting and absolutely mesmerizing piece of music that will reverberate in listeners long after the last note has issued forth. For classical enthusiasts, the piece is an essential part of any well-stocked library. For audiophiles who are into something a bit different, a bit challenging, and a bit wonderful, this recording is one that must be sought. For the rest, who are a little bit of both....what more is there to be said?

Rubicon (1975) came on the heels of Tangerine Dream's breakthrough success, Phaedra, which reached #15 on the UK charts in 1974 and followed Atem, which in 1973 was declared by John Peel album of the year. Phaedra was a big hit for Virgin Records as well and helped (along with MIke Oldfield's Tubular Bells ) catapult Richard Branson's fledgling company to a wide range of listeners who were on the prowl for something different. Like its predecessor, Rubicon is a continuous piece, composed of two parts a little more than 17.5 minutes apiece. The mood is atmospheric and industrial, with interludes of mystery and psychedelic intrigue. Interspersed through the piece is Richard Bauman's flute, which hovers through the Moogs and mellotrons. This is another one of those albums that are best listened to when the lights are low, or on rainy days when the mood is right. True, it is a trippy listen, but for lovers of electronic music and those looking for something off the main line, Rubicon is a wonderful segue to Imagination's Threshold.

Look very good Chubbs. With me, looks mean a lot and you sorta got that classy look going on with that pic. The spindle is kinda short tho. You have got to get a clamp or weight. So ima sure you going to change it out some time down the road? Your new arm is really going to set it off. Once again man...congrats....you put alot off your hard earned into your gear man...thats what it takes.

Thanks alot frenchie. Means alot coming from you. You've been instrumental with your encouragment, but more importantly with your guidance through the jungle we call Jazz.
As for the spindle, it's short because the mat is ultra thick. Frankly, I like it. It helps to dampen the already heavy platter. Keep in mind the platter and arm board are suspended. Also, Linn are dead against weights or clamps, which is the camp my table falls under. I have yet to level the platter, and I'm not sure if I will set it with a weight or not.
More worrisome than the spindle is the rest for the tonearm. I had to raise the VTA and the rest is much too short. As a result the arm slopes down almost to the point of the stylus touching the table!! Replacement is the first thing I must do.
As for modding, I must first get everything 100% with the existing pieces. Then I still have research to do, and hopefully some auditioning of arms I've yet to hear. I'm not in a huge rush, this thing sounds killer as is. BTW, the cart is an Audio Technica VM8-HII with a shibata stylus. It's technically vintage but with the stylus upgrade it sounds heavenly.
PM sent.

Never gets the attention his father got but still has a loyal following from those who loved his dad John Coltrane. In my opinion, Ravi, just like many Jazz artist of this generation, play more post bop than straight ahead, hard bop. I guess it sells more, I dont know.. I guess its just the continuing unfolding and evolving of the American music art form.
But in my opinion there is nothing like the American music that began in the American melting pot of American slavery which started as acoustic or folk spirituals with songs and instruments from west Africa and which evolved into minstrels or slave songs evolving into acoustic blues, acoustic jazz with all its parts then into rhythm and blues and rock and roll and all the way up until what we have into todays music. American Country folk music even had a branch on the tree deriving from Africa and Europe.

There ya go, starting to get interesting around here...
My playlist today is dragging around some old favorites from a dusted off new-old comp called Smoke from a Lithium Dream, in honor of one of the best songs of the 00's, a colossal closer from one of the best albums of the last few years in Animal Years, from one of the best artists of the last decade, Josh Ritter.
Friday off after a long week, the smell of Sierra Nevada hops now in the air, and some good music in the air too...

Hey Davey... dont let my love for the pioneers in Jazz keep you from posting what you're spinning.
Most of us American old timers had our erector sets tuned to good ol' jazz and rock and country blues growing up, hard to keep it all separate. But biggest payoff for me nowadays is the Americana stuff, dusty Nashville studios haunted with ghosts from other times. Check out that cover of "Trouble In Mind", man that one has been around for about forever ...but always sounds new to me.

Charlie Haden bass, Ernie Watts Sax, Alan Broadbent Piano, Larance Marable Drums
For those who know Charlie Haden and love Cool Jazz, this is for you. Out standing work here.
Besides Quartets own playing, the recording also contains outstanding performances by Colman Hawkins in 1962, Joe Stafford with Paul Weston and his orchestra in 1944, Stephane Grappelli in 1944, Duke Ellinginton in 1959, Chet Baker in 1955.

LP, Dan Fogelberg & Tim Weisberg, Twin Sons of Different Mothers. Not quite what I expected but a good album with better than average sound quality.
LP, Rush, Permanent Waves and the one side of Caress Of Steel with Bastille Day.
I tried to play an LP, Bloomfield, Cooper & Stills, Super Sessions but it was in pretty rough shape so I tossed it aside after a couple tracks. What a shame.
Earlier listened to a group called Redemption on CD.

I love that Metheny album and use to own it back in the day when it first came out. Back then I bought anything with Dewey and Haden on it. Especially Dewey,
Also those group of musicians seemed to be clickish back then. Especially Haden Dewey and Metheny and Brecker. It seemed when ever one headlined an album, they had at lease one of the guy in their circle. I think they where all on the same label..ECM. If you can find any of the "Old and New Dreams" albums grab them. Its with that same circle of guys. I was really sad that Dewey died. His son Joshua , while great, in my opinion is not the sax player his dad was. His dad along with charlie Haden did some great things with Ornett Colman back in the late 50's and early 60's

Sifting through some vinyl today.
Lighthouse, One Fine Morning. Good album and a classic but a bit too rough to keep.
Nat King Cole, Love. This is a great album, never thought I'd be saying that about Nat, this album swings, most of his stuff I've heard in the past has been "candlelight" type music. The LP is on Capital and heavy vinyl, sound quality is very good. May need another cleaning but a keeper.
Hall & Oates, I think a best of thing. This is one instance where I think the LP sounds better however it was a bit too rough to keep.
Blood Sweat & Tears, I missed the title but this is an album with a different singer than Clayton Thomas. It was good though and I added it to my collection.

Nat Coles "Unforgetable" is a classic recording.....you dont like that? And before Nat started singing he did a lots of trio bop Jazz He was also a side man playing piano in many Jazz groups. He is really a good pianist. But he got his fame when he started singing. His brother who is still living "Freddie Cole" aint bad either.
Blood Sweat & Tears???? Yeah, I would be in tears.:wink5:

I've been shopping more than usual lately. Probably more misses than hits. Grabbed a bunch of $3 CDs from the Jazz Bins at Newbury Comics. Many were SACD/CD hybrids and none were used. Jazz is cheap these days.
The winners:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51eQu%2BmMVIL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
Stellar. Can't figure out why I never really listened to Nina before...my loss.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51YdRMCrpDL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
Really good. Fresh and modern but with an emotionality that makes it connect. Most of the newer things I buy just sound cold and over intellectual. This one works where others have failed. I also like the band behind her. Much of the album is muscular, intricate, and fast. But, there's also a nice slow bluesy track, "Joy". First I've listened to from Hiromi and would be happy to hear if others have good suggestions from the rest of her catalog. She really packs a lot into her fingers.
http://www.bossa.net/image/R/Raul_de_Souza/Colors-thumb.jpg
A nice random pickup. I grabbed it because 1) it was $3, 2) It looked 'bossa', and 3) featured trombone. Winner. Rich sounds, good latin rhythms. easy to like and happy. Mixes some genres but doesn't fail like a lot of stuff I've bought from the mid-70s.
Not sure yet...

Jason Moran: Ten
Some good playing. I haven't found a time to listen beyond the first three tracks. I think it deserves some true listening, but putting it on casually I just don't find myself getting to the end.
Decent finds also included...
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61aiPwBiKpL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
classic, as expected. 2CD.
Actually this one is very interesting to listen to as I listen in parallel with the next up on my Miles Davis project (http://forums.audioreview.com/showpost.php?p=338858&postcount=65). Close in time. There's some post-Coltrane Miles playing Monk...
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51MuQAz8x2L._SL500_AA300_.jpg
pleasant enough.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51zoHmYvK7L._SL500_AA300_.jpg
haven't gotten to this one yet.

Might as well keep going on to the non-jazz side...
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61bMyL3g45L._SL500_AA300_.jpg
Disappointing. For a listen or two, I liked it but then it started to just annoy me. Maybe I developed some sort of negative reaction to irony or something. The one exception is the song, "The Thread". Not like anything else on the album and, I think, a real gem of an honest song.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61B3oKLwUoL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
I feel a bit swindled by the hype machine. I didn't really expect it to live up to all the hype. But then, I didn't expect it to be so dang boring and uninteresting either. Beware the hyped album that sells for $9.99 upon release on Amazon, I suppose.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41w18dLQL-L._SL500_AA300_.jpg
I enjoy this one. First exposure to Autolux for me. It's survived many full listens and I can say that I'll want to hear it again. It wallows a bit, but it's stays short enough to avoid becoming too tiresome. I like the textures and the general feel. Oddly, I find myself thinking of Dark Side of the Moon as I listen... Breathe.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51XRWOH4kQL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
An odd little winner. Strange though it is, it does many things right in my book. It's got a nice range of sounds, a few beautiful songs (All you need is a wall). Some ineteresting juxtapositions of 'found sounds' and compositions. It has a sense of humor and doesn't wield its irony like a bitter pill. I find it real engaging and highly listenable. It feels like someone put a lot of time and thought into the album, but It doesn't take itself too seriously. A concept album that succeeds in my book.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51y9mZrI6OL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
I confess to buying this for one track (Mexico Wax Solvent). However, as a post punk album, it mostly delivers a very satisfying listen. I have no idea what the lead singer is saying throughout, but he mutters incoherently extremely well. Several of the tracks build fury with a slow and delicious simmer. I really enjoy the drunken/comatose slurring of the vocals over the rocking beats, the raw dissonance, the casio keyboard groove etc. Still, can't say where any of the songs actually go. It's a bit like catharsis without crisis. Nothing wrong with catharsis though. Post punk as background music? Mexico Wax Solvent is the high point for me.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51rExMTTc6L._SL500_AA300_.jpg
Lovely and interesting. A bit of everything that kind of channels some mixture of Kate Bush, Fionna Apple and Tori Amos, as well as some nice folkish sound. The indie radio here plays Four Dreams a lot,and it does stick in ones head (add a shot of The Bangles to the mix). I personally like the first track Whispering Light.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61DONAcAUhL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
Excellent. Really enjoying this one. It contradicts my above statement of beware the $9.98 release. But, I see it's $9.58 on Amazon now. Maybe that's the difference. Buy this one. Honesty and insight and good melodies. I kept thinking of the heartache expressed in the old honky tonk songs my dad still sings on occasion. There's a lot in this album to like for the short haul, the long haul, the lonesome road...etc.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51sV7SA9zQL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
An older release. Saw it mentioned in a thread and decided to try it. Thanks to whomever recommended!

We're on vacation this week at the beach. Was at the mercy of the old IPod as to what to listen to this week. The houses that we rent never have any kind of decent sound system. At least this one had a 42" LCD in the living room. In the SUV we had the XM radio which is great for traveling. Hovered between the Jazz Standards and the 40's and 50's stations.
At home I have some new CD's that arrived while I was away.

Anyways - now that I am back full time as audioreview site manager and working from home I get to listen to music almost non-stop. I hate to say it - the vinyl hasn't come out much. To distracting to get up a flip every 20min. Thanks PC for the Magnavox CPD again - the laid back sound makes listening easy for long periods.

I actually - two sets. I currently am running the EC PI-2 amplifier bi-wired into the PMC TB2i bookshelf speakers.
I have two different gages. The thicker gage going into the woofer and a thinner gage going into the tweeter.
I noticed right away this combo pushed the treble to a higher volume and added a greater feeling of 'excitement' to the system. This can boarder line on being too harsh and fatiguing when using the EC PC-1 CDP - but that harshness can be tamed with ICs that slightly roll off the top. Or I can just have shorter listening sessions.
What I really like about this combo is that now the treble sounds more solid. There is plenty of headroom still, but the treble no longer sounds like it is being blown away in the wind. Or that overly airy sound. I like a solid treble, and it gives me that.
When playing vinyl the combination is perfect. The vinyl doesn't posses that hard CD sound that can be fatiguing and with the pumped up treble the TB2i speakers feel more balanced between the tweeter and woofer.
The speakers also seem to have focused the bass. It now sounds more center.
Staging and mids don't appear much changed compared to the standard speaker wire I had before. I've actually noticed, these two seem to be more effected by my choice in power cable, at least with the combo I have running currently.
Overall I like the PC specials. They are a little hard to move around, but other than that they seems to have acted much like the solid copper core ICs I have, but in a better way.
Besides the speaker cables PC sent me a turn table weight. Now I honestly wasn't expecting much to happen with that but boy was I wrong. The bass is way more defined and punchy with the weight on. The music sounds more livelier and cleaner all around.
I'm very happy with the weight, what a wonderful gift!

How is that Stanley Turrentine? I've got Blue Hour and it's one of my top jazz favorites. Can you compare or comment? Such a rich, 'come on' sound he's got. Can't complain about Sugar either; pleases both the Turrentine and the Hubbard fan--Sultry + Sizzle.

Yes Noddin, I have both of those. That set with the 3 Sounds is fantastic, you don't need to compare. They all have merit and should be in your colection. Aside from Hustlin you should get That's Where It's At. These two LPs are Turrentine at his most fluid.
I am a big Hubbard fan. He blew a geat set on Sugar, but IMO his best sideman work was with Hancock. Empyrean Isles was all Hubbard, he stole the show.
We musn't forget Benson and Carter on Sugar, the whole line up is stupid good. Back in the day Benson could shred with the best of them, he still can but chooses to be "smooth". Here's a couple of rec's for Benson and Carter too...

MrP put this on last night and it was just outstanding. So I asked for a copy and this mornig it just knocked my socks off. I guess its sorta like Jazz Fusion with a little space music thrown in. This is one of those recordings that if played through warm or laid back speakers, you will miss a lots of high end detail.

Hey Rae,
Not a big fan of your 2nd hip hop post, but I dig the first.
I was spinning some old(er) school hiphop earlier this week and couldn't get enough of it. In the name of O.C. Word Life, I think I'll spin some DITC on wax tonight.
http://image.lyricspond.com/image/t/artist-the-roots/album-illadelph-halflife/cd-cover.jpg
If you are feeling something outside of hiphop, try this for a spin.
One of the best finds for me this year.
Nothing new, but it still gets it right.

Peace,

Hey Rae, Not a big fan of your 2nd hip hop post, but I dig the first.
Ha! The first one is all east-coast stuff, which I vastly prefer from that era. The second gets into some g-funk, which is really more toward my co-worker's taste than mine. Very observant! Although I will go toe-to-toe with you any day on the OutKast and UGK records.

Possibly the best battle concept ever put to wax. By far one of my favorite hip hop LPs EVER.
'94 was a fine year but pre 90's was better. There was no east/west bullchit. The music was new and exciting.
Some great albums in your list Rae. I would have added another of my early 90's faves, infact, it's my favorite hip hop album ever put out. It's in one word...perfect.

heres one that i THOUGHT was recent but NO, its from '04. i had heard some of robert miles' music and just thought it was sort of pedestrian smooth stuff but this is quite stimulating.
i have numerous other trilok gurtu recordings, most of which are very addictive so when 'gurtu' showed up in the title of this one, i jumped on it. http://www.allmusic.com/i/spacer.gif

Can't seem to stop playing this. It's only available on itunes, cdbaby and Spotify (do you americans still not get Spotify?) and it bothers me greatly that there isn't a CD to purchase. Doesn't seem available for ilegal download anywhere either (I'd gladly buy the CD, but there is no way in hell i'm paying for a crappy download)

really good one from the Microphones that I just picked up...still skewed but not as epic or heavy as the Mt. Eerie work that he does now. Cool if you like Eric's Trip or some of that arty, fuzz pop from the K Records library.

Agree with you on Girl Talk. It's starting to sound like Stars on 45 to me.
Sometimes it can be deliriously sublime, like dropping Lil' Wayne over "Stepping Out"... but other times it can be just gratingly awful like Rihanna paired with Fugazi's "Waiting Room" (I'm not gonna let you spoil that one for me, Greg!) or the umpteenth usage of "War Pigs" or "I Want You Back" in a rap remix...

Yep. And while I'm glad he used one of my favorite Devo songs ("Gates of Steel"), by the time I got to that part, I was sick of the album. It seems like too much of a formula he's sticking to, and I'd like more singing vocals as opposed to rap vocals.

Picked up some vinyl yesterday. 4 Henry Mancini records and 2 Gershwin from the thrift store for $5. They are all dirty and need cleaning. But I also picked up Sufjan Steven's Age of Adz and Eels' Tomorrow Morning.
http://gallery.audioreview.com/data/audio//500/ageofadz.jpg
I heard this already on NPR's First Play, I figured it would be a good one to pick up on vinyl - hoping that it would help warm up/fill out the simple electronics. It does, but so far, granted this is only the 1st play of the vinyl, the dynamic shifts are mundane. Maybe it will open up more on a few more spins. Nothing as grand or as soft as the shifts in Illinois. For instance, with all the clicky crazy sounds the electronics make, why isn't there the detail of mirco-dynamics like between the guitar and piano on John Wayne Gacy, Jr.? Also - the detail in the electronics are a bit amateurish. There is little depth to what I hear so far. Kind of like when Radiohead tried to go electric. Songs are good, and creative, but you can hear the difference between a cross over artist and someone who has come up in electronic music.
http://gallery.audioreview.com/data/audio//500/tomorrow-morning.jpg
Haven't spun it yet but am excited to hear it.
Update.... oh the vinyl is so thin. Could not tell because there is a 45 single disc in the package as well - so - it made it appear stiff. Shame shame E-Works records for putting out such a floppy disc. I'd much rather that extra 45 plastic went into the LP instead. But so far the music is good.

The Slackers: The Great Rocksteady Swindle
This is a group I've really slept on. Last year I picked up their Afternoon in Dub album and really enjoyed it and still play it frequently. Now, I've just listened to their latest and I'm really digging it. They mold a lot of traditional ska and rocksteady sounds quite well. Just started listening to this one but so far so good. Anyone know more about these guys, I'd appreciate suggestions of what albums to check out.
I had some friends that used to listen to the Slackers about a decade ago. I think we even roadtripped to Chicago to see them once although I didn't go to the show (I think I just bummed around town). I remember that they went emo for at least one album when a lot of other third-wave ska bands were doing the same, so if you're looking into their back catalog, be careful.

Yeah, my being generally skeptical about anything called a ska band from this era is why I figure I'd need someone to cherry pick albums if I look around too much at these guys. The two I have heard I have liked though.

Hey Poppa,
You ever listen to J-Live?
JRA
I think I have a mix with him on it, but I would have to say no. I'll look into thanks man. I am snowed in today.

Yeah, my being generally skeptical about anything called a ska band from this era is why I figure I'd need someone to cherry pick albums if I look around too much at these guys. The two I have heard I have liked though.
Well said. One would have to assume that any band inferring ska in their make up would have to be well schooled in the history. That said, some of them are so far off the mark that either they have never listened to anything earlier than Madness, or they just don't get it. Either way is no good.
I am always up for something new but c'mon, Dekker still has it. He is still the King of Ska.

I like it nobody...alot. I only got through about 4 tracks on my headphones. I will load it onto my portable while I shovel, along with these.

Yeah, I'm gonna really need some of that Turrentine. You just gotta let me know where I should start first.
If you liked that Slackers, try Afternoon in Dub. I should be able to hook you up. All instrumentals, but another good one by them.

Can't think of a better way to defeat the snowy blues. Anybody heard Byron Lee and The Dragonaires? I have 7 of their LPs, all original. Very rare. Of course they are all digitized but I like to listen to the Lps occasionally. All instrumental ska/rocksteady.
OK my night will be irie now. Boh!!!

Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space!
Yeah, this release almost seems inevitable as soon as you see it. It's actually 2 CDs, the first one gathering new tracks or at least new versions of tracks from modern Dubstep artists like Kode 9, Shackleton, Loefah, Mala, and King Midas Sound. The second disc Scientist takes it all and remixes the hell out of it. If that sounds like a good idea; it is. If you like this ****, you likely really need this.

That would be quite an undertaking. Besides, I like Elvis way too much to be objective. It would totally be a skewed perspective.

Prospect Hummer - Animal Collective/Vashti Bunyan collab. Really good!
O.I.C.!
That Sonic Youth cover is really bringing me down memory lane. "The Sonic Youth". I had an orange t-shirt screenprinted with that album art that I wore continuously from age 14 to 22... at least that's how I remember it. It's still in my drawer but somehow unlike most t-shirts that get softer and softer with age this one has somehow calcified to the point that it is almost painful to wear because of all the little hard stabby points in the seams.

I've been on a Dionne Warwick/Burt Bacharach jag as of late.
"Walk on By - The Definitive Dionne Warwick Collection"
"The Look of Love - The Burt Bacharach Collection"
The Dionne Disk contains some rare Dionne Versions of songs not done before. like her version of "Wishin' and Hopin" which Dusty copped note for note much to Dionne's chagrin. The two never got along well. The Bacharach Collection has educated me immensely. Who knew he wroten songs for acts as varied as The Drifters, Gene Pitney and the Stylistics!!!???? "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance"???? Are you chittin' me?!!???? Great 3 disk set.

Big Black: Racer X
The first Big Black record I happened into and still my favorite. Not sure if it is the best or if its discordant squalling guitars, industrial rhythms and screeching vocals smacked me around good and subsequent things I heard from them just didn't have the same initial impact. Either way, I really pretty much just play this one when I wanna hear Big Black. I've spent a bit of time with other releases and enjoy them, but this is the slab that always pulls me back.

Hadn't heard Racer X before but tried it out. Good stuff. An excellent jump start to a morning washed down with strong coffee. Really liked the drum and bass sound. Wish I'd known about them in the 80's. Coulda spared me a lot of time listening to Ratt and the likes.
But, I'm sad to say I went from heavy to mind-numbingly soft.. :-)
