LOVE Jackie Mittoo. When I talk to people who don't know who he is I will often describe him as what you would get had Booker T Jones been born in Jamaica. I'm gonna go throw The Keyboard King at Studio One on right now.

That Terrence Trent album is better than it often gets credit for to me. That cover her does at the end the name of which I forget really shows what a great vocalist he was. Shame he never equaled that debut again.

And, the new Raveonettes slays...

Raveonettes: In and Out of Control

OK, this one's got its hooks in me. And quite a lot of hooks it has. Absolutely their poppiest record to date. It's got plenty of that retro Duane Eddy meets Jesus & Mary Chain guitar sound, but the distortion is a bit more pulled back and controlled. Reminds me of Pretty in Black in that regard, but is a more cohesive listen straight through. While ot a total fuzzball like Lust Lust Lust, but he does let loose with the distortion now and then. A semi-step forward coupled with a step back to dip into their previous sounds making this sound fresh yet totally like the Raveonettes you already like if you're a fan. I'm digging it, but I'm not real objective as I've liked basically everything there guys have released.

Peabody, I had the pleasure of Lunatic Soul on my portable. Great medium for it, my K66 loved it. Overall I enjoyed it, love the ambient stuff. Also dig how they switch from electronica to a jazz tinged jam in the same track. Bass player has great chops and tone. The only thing I didn't like was that there were definitely some flatline moments, the pacing of the album could have used a little life at points. But I get what they are doing and it's good, thanks for the suggestion P. Have you listened to any Massive Attack? I really think they would be up your alley, DL Mezzanine, awesome album.

Poppa C, I hear you but like you said to step things up would ruin the mood they were going for. I'll check Massive Attack.

Nobody, I liked In & Out Of Control, it would be my second purchase if Pretty In Black pleases me the way I think it will. I think I like their Pop/60's kind of thing they do on these albums. Sorry, Poppa, from the samples Whip it sounded similar all the way through and more like LLL. I could like these maybe with a complete listen but from samples I'm not convinced to buy.

Speaking of Massive Attack, this is a nice release. Horace Andy's traditional reggae sounds mixed with the more modern electronic styles he works so well within with Massive Attack. A nice album of futuristic dub.

They fall under electronica, trip hop if you will. Yes, most songs are structured to have verses and choruses, and its far more than a sleepy beat playing endlessly. There is a definite mood and feel to their albums, that's why I thought you'd dig it. If you're unsure , just DL a torrent to check it out. How long is a sample anyhow? There are some great cuts on that album, most popularily "Tear Drop" (you may know it as the theme song from TV show House) and "Dissolved Girl" from The Matrix soundtrack.

The average song length is 5-6 minutes. That should tell you enough, they're in and out, to the point with the hooks. As compared to Lunatic Soul, much less exploring and more structure. Great vocals too...Crystal Method is crap

I like Massive Attack quite a bit...Mezzanine is a fine album: very layered and ambient and moody. Crystal Method is also very talented, but in my experience (as in Vegas), the comps are more driving and energetic. Massive attack can also be driving (Angel), but I think overall they are quite melodic and organic, as compared to the heavy techno-influenced and flavored CM.

Got my Raveonettes today!

Over the weekend I pulled a couple albums out of a batch to check out. One was Bob Seger, Smoking OP's. Not many hits on this I thought but I gave it a spin, wow, what a boogie factor. Now I know why this album was/is so popular, classic Seger. If something on your body isn't moving while this album is on some one better take your pulse. Some decent organ too. I also played Jim Stafford's Best Of, I remember a couple of those 70's hits but I was quite surprised I liked nearly every song on the album and the sound quality was good as well. Those were keepers. I also spun Journey's, Frontiers album. Pretty bad and that's from a Journey fan. The only songs worth listening to were the hits off that album, I think three. Two of them are in the running for my favorite Journey songs, Faithfully & Separate Ways. But I have their Greatest Hits for that latter stuff so that platter went in the pile I need to do something with, trade/sell.

Alright, even Auric likes Messanine, I guess I'll have to go for it.

Pearl Jam - Backspacer

Backspacer is to Pearl Jam as Accelerate is to REM. Picked this up yesterday. It's very good, but not one of the great PJ albums. I like it though. Like Accelerate, Backspacer is an album of one of the great bands having fun. Missing is the angst I typically associate (and like) with earlier albums. There's also a lot of retro influences. I get the impression that it's not only a band enjoying themselves but also a bit of a tribute to sounds and bands that they grew up with or listened to. I put up a couple of tracks below. One make this point clear.

The other thing I was noting is that Eddie needs to figure out where his aging voice is going. I dig, have dug, his voice. Very emotional. Sounds like it's not as elastic as it used to be. There's a nice track (also included), Just Breathe, where his voice breaks and I'm thinking a younger voice would have pulled it off better. I have confidence that with a bit of retooling and allowing their music to address their aging fans, they/he can reinvent himself and put out another great album.

I kind of left the album thinking this was a very fine, well executed, and remarkably fun and optimistic 'last hurrah' for the old Pearl Jam before moving on to something different.

Prince: Lovesexy

I always liked this one. 1988. CD's were completing their takeover of Tower Records. Instant access to any given track was starting to change the way people interacted with their music. You didn't have to listen to the full album or the linear flow anymore because instant track gratification was a click of a button away. Then Prince puts out a CD of nine songs as ONE TRACK... hmmm. An interesting artistic statement that probably killed the marketability of a good album. Wiki says Alphabet St., Glam Slam, and I Wish U Heaven were the singles released. I remember Alphabet St. on the radio, a good one. However, the other stand out tracks for me were Anna Stesia and Dance On. I couldn't play Dance On loud enough. Clickable artwork below. Oh...and about that artwork...cracks me up. The phallic stamen, Prince is a bold one.

Nice to see some accolades for his royal purpleness...I for one, LOVE Prince. He is as brilliant as any greats before him, having a natural ability to write, produce and perform in a way that touches popular culture. He's the natural extension of James Brown and P-Funk, but I'm hard pressed to find anyone nowadays who can fill HIS shoes. Kanye West?!? Certainly not!! Simply put, when Prince goes potty, out comes a wonderful melody.

Lovesexy is a fantastic album, I have had Emancipation spinning lately, CD...this album is really special, 3 discs of great material that he had been saving for after his departure from Warner, which I'm sure everyone knows about.

This album is quite amazing! I bought it a few weeks ago but just cleaned it up and spun it today. A first listen for me. I now understand how Elton John and "rock" can be uttered in the same sentence. The great thing with this live album, is he "rolls" as well.

For 1970, you will find no hippy-dippy stuff on here. No pre-disco boogie either, just good ol rock. Elton and his band are a tight, cohesive, well-oiled machine. The execution is flawless, yet never lacks soul or passion as some backing bands tend to do. The jam interludes are musically exquisite and one gets a mental image of John up and rockin on his piano.

I'm sure many of you have heard this already, but I was floored by what a gem this record is. I will be spinning this for a few days I'm sure...

Handsome Family: Twilight

Probably my second favorite Handsome Family after Through The Trees. Some days my favorite. A bit catchier than that one, with a couple verse, chorus, verse songs and all that. Their new one isn't bad either, better than the last one. But, I still find myself returning to a few old favorites and haven't really played it a ton. Gothic Country at its finest throughout their discography.

One of my favorite 'cover bands' -- The Mingus Big Band

I think these guys do a terrific job of channeling the spirit of Mingus. Blues & Politics is my favorite. Gunslinging Birds is a close second. Mingus, in my mind, was a social activist in the Jazz medium. His work can be dissonant, but there's structure there. Many of my favorites compositions have the call and response rhythms of holy rollin church sermons; one instrument is preaching and the rest of the band is shouting 'Amen'...or arguing. I always liked that his compositions really try to extend beyond the 4 minute mark. He was into large ensembles and extended compositions. And he was very much a composer. I grabbed this quote from wiki

"...if the free-form guys could play the same tune twice, then I would say they were playing something...Most of the time they use their fingers on the saxophone and they don't even know what's going to come out."

Anyway... I'm no Mingus or Jazz expert. I started out listening to Miles, then Monk, some Coltrane...then I eventually hit Mingus and I found something that I really dig, even if I sometimes struggle with it. Click the pic and give a listen, a full listen. Don't miss Meditations, Oh Lord, and Freedom.

More Specials

Follow-up to their classic debut album. This one's a little more laid back, but has just as much good stuff as far as I am concerned. Maybe the debut gets all the attention now, but a Specials album with songs like, Hey Little Rich Girl, Rat Race and Stereotypes is pretty damn solid.

I'm on a roll. Next up on this weeks spin table Mulato Astatke & the Heliocentrics: Inspiration Information 3 (2009). Both Astatke and the Heliocentrics are new to me. But I saw some intriguing reviews and picked it up.

Definitely worth a listen. We have an Ethiopian jazz dude joining up with a collective group that merge hip-hop, funk, jazz, psychedelic, electronic... I'm thinking that if only Sun Ra and the Arkestra were still kicking he might think--well, I have no idea what Sun Ra would think but this made me think of him.

The album is an eclectic, heavy groove, and beat laden stream of cool sounds. So much stuff blended together so effortlessly, so groovily, so oddly. Thoroughly enjoyable, although I don't think any single track hits a solid home run. I put the first two tracks behind the album art for those that want a taste. Be careful, you may find yourself wanting to be an international secret super spy of mystery and rhythm.

Hey nobody I was looking at your 2 channel list and saw that you're using an SL-Q3. Just got an SL-Q2. I'm lovin it, put an Ortofon 2M Red on it, this is the follow up to the OM 10. Good stuff, we certainly have good taste, don't we?!?

I like my Q3 quite a lot. I tried a couple other low priced tables and the Q3 was an improvement over them and also had to auto shut off and repeat things that lots of people don't care about, but that I enjoy having. Thing has been totally trouble free and seems solid as a rock too. I'm using a vintage Shure M91ED right now on mine, but also have an Ortofon OM-40 I use from time to time. Honestly though, I've been pretty annoyed at my set up for the last year or so because the room I've had it in is terrible for sound. Looking forward to moving in a couple months and getting things set up in a better location.

Burning Ambitions: A History of Punk

One of my all-time favorite compilations. Fantastic cover art, featuring Sgt. Peppers done up with the Sex Pistols taking over the center stage. Great song selection. Even though you see the Pistols and Clash on the cover, the tracks inside leave 'em out, instead gathering classics from groups like Wire, Vice Squad, The Vibrators, The Saints, and many more. It starts out with 70s English stuff and includes a nod to the US with a Heartbreakers track and moves on to a few early hardcore tracks by Dead Kennedys, GBH, etc... They eventually released a 3 CD version of this thing, but they never have released a CD version that contains the complete original track listing, which I will give you here, if you click the pic...

Boredom - Buzzcocks
Bingo Master's Breakout - The Fall
1, 2, X U - Wire
Life - ATV
Keys To Your Heart - 101'ers
I'm Alive - 999
Gary Gilmore's Eyes - Adverts
Justifiable Homicide - Dave Goodman and Friends
Where Have All The Boot Boys Gone? - Slaughter and the Dogs
(Get a) Grip On (Yourself) - The Stranglers
Your Generation - Generation X
Baby Baby - The Vibrators
Identity - X-Ray Spex
Read About Seymour - Swell Maps
I'm Stranded - The Saints
Chinese Rocks - Heartbreakers
Lock It Up - Eater
Ain't Got A Clue - Lurkers
Lady - Adam and The Ants
Love Song - The Damned
Looking After No. 1 - Boomtown Rats
Where's Captain Kirk? - Spizzenergi
In A Rut - The Ruts
Angels With Dirty Faces - Sham 69
Stranglehold - UK Subs
Flares and Slippers - Cockney Rejects
The Wait - Killing Joke
No Government - Anti-Pasti
Holiday In Cambodia - Dead Kennedy's
Dead Cities - The Exploited
Last Rockers - Vice Squad

I'm not enough of a punk fan to really enjoy a comp like that. Really just too novelty for me. However I do find all the old school hard core wicked fun and I see some of those groups on there. I think Bad Brains is one of my old school faves, right up there with Zep, etc. So underrated and underappreciated. If you look at what they created and what they did for popular and underground music, it's mind boggling...

Big Youth: Screaming Target

Absolute classic of the genre. Great big echoing production by Gussie Clarke. Don't settle for the earlier reissue as the mix sucks and the newer expanded reissue from a couple years back adds on a bunch of great, previously hard-to-find singles and versions

Looks good, I love the reggae side to Bad Brains. Speaking of punk, have you heard any Death from Above? Toronto duo, now split. Drummer and bassist who share vocals. Better live than on any recording, could fill a room with sound as well as any five piece.

I snagged these today. All in great shape but the Steve Miller is 200 grams. 2 bucks each and cleaned up great!

Steve Miller Band - Fly Like an Eagle (live)
Hall and Oates - Rock n Soul (best of)
Cheap Trick - At Budokan (live)
America - History (best of)

Are you talking about Death From Above 1979? I went out and bought their first (?) CD after I saw their performance on Conan. The drummer got up to sing and Max Weinberg ran over and played drums for the rest of the song. Great performance, and while the CD is good, I can definitely see why you say they were better live.

That Hall & Oats always gives me pause. I basically despise their later songs, but She's Gone, Rich Girl, and Sara Smile always sound fantastic to me. I grabbed their greatest hits album for a couple bucks too just to have that trio of tunes.

No time to post a pic and/or link right now, but listening to a french re-issue of the first Gene Vincent & the Blue Caps that tacks on Be-Bop-A-Lula and a couple other singles onto the end of the album. Great stuff.

Thanks Auri, I wasn't expecting too much out of this album, since Enos has been a giant hit or miss for me in the past. But this is a great album, as you know, and it was my first time hearing this album. For that, I can't compare it to the original version, but this LP sounds very very good. I've had the privelege of seeing Megadeth and the Cult in clubs of less than a thousand...last year I watched Yo La Tengo in an intimate little gathering of less than three hundred...been in a place called the "The Chatterbox" when Wynton Marsalis walked in and blew horn for two hours to less than fifty people...but there's something to be said for the spirit of these festivals...whether it's Rammstein in Berlin, Dave Mathews in Central Park these things become less about an event and more about a moment in time...there's something about the energy of a few hundred thousand people that is irreplaceable...

Nobody, let's start with files, do you use MP3 or lossless? I am undecided on what to do. I presently use 320kbps MP3 which is fine for the most part. However, when I am using my portable, any recording short of perfect is audibly weak to my ears. I am not prepared for lossless whatsoever. I would need a new portable source, external HD and the time it would take to convert, which is really short around here lately. I am STILL working on the Byron Lee torrent, almost done BTW!!. I think I may just stick with MP3 unless I can be convinced otherwise. Thoughts??

How's the DFA anyhow?

Tres Doggy's eh, man I haven't heard any for years. Good Stuff

Anyway, not sure if I get your meaning here, but there would be no benifit to convert Mp3s to lossless, the damage is already done. You would have to rerip everything in a lossless format.

I'm sure other people know more than I do about this digital stuff but I can tell you what I do. I save everything from either CD or LP as FLAC lossless on an external hard drive that has 1TB of space and also create a VBR MP3s and file those on the hard drive. Then, I put the VBR MP3s on my iPod and listen through that. I considered doing lossless through the iPod, but the big reason I went digital in the first place was to be able to carry a ton of music around in a little device and there is a pretty giant difference on how much you can fit MP3 vs. Lossless, like almost 10 times as much.

MP3 is a sound quality sacrifice. I know some people say there is no difference, but I think that's crazy. I usually use the iPod through my car stereo and even like that I can totally hear differences, particularly in songs with some hot sounding cymbals that stand out. I've heard people say how you convert helps with that sort of thing, but I have certain songs I've messed with a bunch and can't get rid of the distorted cymbals. I made the decision to have lesser sound for convenience sake in the car and portability.

I can play through my home stereo in lossless if I want to, although I pretty much never do, and I've got those lossless files for if I ever want to listen to CD quality in the car. I'd definitely suggest keeping those around just in case the sound sacrifice is too much for you. But yeah, like already said once you have something in MP3, you can't improve it so no point in converting to anything else from MP3s you already have.

For MP3s, I can't really tell much if any difference between VBR MP3s and the 320 ones, so I just use VBR which saves a decent amount of space vs. 320.

On bit of advice I'd give is keep your files organized. Mine are pretty much a mess and if I ever have to rebuild my iPod or anything's files I'd have my work cut out for me even though I do have all the files. I have more recently tried to be careful about filing things away in an organized manner and wish I had done so from the start.

And I am really looking forward to that torrent. No hurry, but let me know.

Laurel Aitken - Anthology: Godfather of Ska

Newly released anthology featuring 52 of Laurel Aitken’s most popular recordings from a period spanning more than thirty years. Highlights a variety of styles, from Mento through Ja. Boogie, Ska, Rock Steady and Boss Reggae, the collection features an array of Jamaican hits, along with his popular 1980s UK hits, making this by far the most comprehensive collection of his work ever to see issue. Really great to see a quality anthology spanning his entire career. This one has been a long time coming.

Great advice. I think I am going to stay with MP3 for now. I just don't have the time to re-rip anyways. I just got done cleaning, re-bagging and organizing all of my vinyl and it took me basically a couple of months, One thing I will do is buy an external HD to throw in the mix.

The thing that's been taking me so long with the torrent is the editing for Audacity. I have been experimenting with post production noise. I hate thinking I am reducing any sound quality by removing hisses and such. Each rip, I have been spending time to play around with the editing. Any thoughts?

That ska album looks really badazz, where did you get it?

Laurel Aitken - Anthology: Godfather of Ska

Newly released anthology featuring 52 of Laurel Aitken’s most popular recordings from a period spanning more than thirty years. Highlights a variety of styles, from Mento through Ja. Boogie, Ska, Rock Steady and Boss Reggae, the collection features an array of Jamaican hits, along with his popular 1980s UK hits, making this by far the most comprehensive collection of his work ever to see issue. Really great to see a quality anthology spanning his entire career. This one has been a long time coming.

I know virtually nothing about this guy, but this looks too good to pass up. Thanks.

I'm spinning Chris DeBurgh's The Getaway this morning. I haven't listened to this album in many, many years. But Chris was in my head this morning so I pulled out the two DeBurgh albums that I have, The Getaway and Spanish Train (up next). I used to be a huge Chris DeBurgh fan back in the early 80's. I haven't paid much attention to his career in the last 20 years. Does he even still have a career?

I didn't realize until this morning that Steve Negus (former drummer for Saga) played on this disk. I was also a huge Saga fan in the 80's, so I don't know how I missed that one.

Lately, I have been boning up on some of the masters of the 20th Century Minimalist movement. I haven't cared that much for many of the works of P. Glass, whose leitmotif gets under my skin at times....On the other hand, I have enjoyed various comps penned by Steve Reich and others, whose work seems to be more captivating and invigorating. The latest one to catch my ear is Reich's Music for 18 Musicians. Using such devices as phase shifts and overlapping cadences (not sure if this is an actual term--hope you get it), Reich's music flows between atonality and melody in a creepy and visceral way. If you're stuck on the 12-note contraints of the Western Musical idiom, Reich might not suit you; but if you can bear exploring a wider world that knows no semitones or rhythms as such, Reich might startle you yet.

I've been spinning The Beatles White Album this morning.

Like Troy never hearing 2112, I've never heard The White Album in it's entirety. But unlike Troy, I've never really consered myself a Beatles fan up until a couple of years ago.

This is an album that I've meant to pick up for several years and just never wanted to fork out the money for. It's pretty expensive relative to the other Beatles albums. But the new remaster along with an HMV gift certificate was enough to finally make the purchase.

Anyway, it's quite good. There's nothing here that I haven't heard before, and I skip Revolution 9 (stupidest thing ever recorded IMO). But that's what's spinning. :)

You must consider where the Beatles were at in that period to truly appreciate it FA. Most importantly, the White Album represents their move back to a more traditional sound as a band, rather than the psychadelic sounds of Pepper or Mystery Tour. Great album, Dear Prudence and Happiness is...couple of my faves.

Perhaps the White album is a bit more expensive because it was an original double LP, not sure if it took two discs. A friend of mine in high school had the LP with white vinyl, I bet that would be worth a fortune today.

War was allowed creativity that seems to scare corporate pin heads today. Listen to some 10cc. If you've never gotten past the hits you missed the band, 10cc albums in the entirety is necessary.

I've got that Billy Thorp. The only songs I really like are Children of The Sun and Eden's Gate. I also have another offering of his, not sure of the title but it has a cool song called In My Room which sounds nothing like Children of the Sun. But I can relate to In My Room.

Auricauricle
11-10-2009, 07:12 AM
I included the Thorpe mostly as a reminiscence of an earlier age, thinking I would append it to the Rush Thread, but placed it here where it would stand on its own merit. Thorpe was a lot of fun when I was 16 or so, but pretty tired 30 plus years later. Still, Thorpe was quite talented, and while his albums didn't reach the heights enjoyed by Rush and others, he did all right nevertheless. The enhanced stereo version of Children of the Sun on Youtube.com is a very nice bit of headphone fodder, and it was good just to sit back and play "Teenager" for a few minutes...

Ram Jam Peabody? Black Betty was stolen from the blues, not unlike most 70's rock songs. Aside from that, I think their albums were kind of lacking.

Mr Peabody
11-10-2009, 04:02 PM
I prefaced that list by saying they were one hit wonders, I didn't say they were my heavily rotated cherished favorites. I'm a collector.

You can't point your finger at any one band and accuse them of borrowing from the Blues, if it wasn't for borrowing from the Blues we wouldn't have Rock-n-Roll at all. He who is innocent let him cast the first stone.

poppachubby

He who is innocent let him cast the first stone.

ummmmm right. And with thine pebble may thou throweth into doth sea I protest. Actually Black Betty is a full out borrowed song, as in a cover. When I say borrowed I mean stolen. Being influenced by the blues is something entirely different, and yes, essential to rock's foundation.

Kind of a pointless history lesson, I was surprised to see Ram Jam in a list from you, based on what I have seen of your tastes. But I didn't know you were a collector which pretty much sums up why it's there. Learn something everyday...

First of two albums released by Johansen with the Harry Smiths. Acoustic, folk, country blues stuff on acoustic instruments. Great playing throughout by an excellent backing band and great song selection. Johansen's voice has a nice deep, word-weary quality rubbed with just enough sandpaper. For anyone who doesn't get the whole James Brown "thing", this album is where you need to start. The band is absolutely cookin'. Vocally JB is in between sweet soul singer and political stream of concious poet. Proof of his genius conveniently pressed onto vinyl. My kid starts dancing as soon as the needle drops, grooves are infectious...

I have been listening to Black Joe Lewis. He has a great sound but owes much to JB. Particularily the call and response with his brass section. Even those who are clueless to JB's music know that much.

Anyhow, I was feeling inspired to write a bit about this one. A real classic...

Even though I long stopped concerning myself with the alignment of my soul with any particular theology... I still enjoy pulling the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack out this time of year. A Classic. This is probably the album that I second most associate with childhood memories of Christmas. The first most memorable was some Johnny Cash album that had a song called Ringing the Bells for Jim. That had to be the most depressing Christmas song ever, we made jokes about it for years. Still do.

The father heard church bells at midnight,
a wrong time for church bells to chime.
He went to the tower, found a little girl there,
Said, ‘Why ring the bells at this time?”
“I'm just ringing the bells for Jim, please, Father
ringing the bells for Jim.
I'm sorry I'm cryin' but my brother Jim's dyin'
so I'm ringing the bells for Jim.
Please, Father pray for him this Christmas
he's sick and he's in so much pain.
The doctors all say he'll be gone any day
so I must ring the bells again”

Man, I wish we still had that album...whatever it was.

But back to Jesus Christ Superstar. Great stuff. What's the Buzz, Everything's Alright. Must listen.
And clickable for 256kbps VBR 70's flashback seasonal goodness.

You can click the album art above and find out first hand! The soundtrack is the only version that I've heard (being but a youngster at the time of release).

Man, I wish we still had that album...whatever it was.

one of the songs has the line "Sorry I'm Crying/My brother Jim's dying/Ring a bell for Jim." Hey, but it's Cash-- what do you expect? Very slow, but some of the songs are good. I'm happy.

For those of you who probably didn't visit my thread. I've been spinning a two disc set of remastered Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush. They recently released a few sets. The one I have has Live/Tales Of The Unexpected/What's Next full length on the two disc set and even though an import only the price of a single U.S. disc. Sounds very good and MR rocks!

The recent post relating to the recent demise of Eric Woolfson (!) brought to my attention the singular talent of one Steve Blasamo, who worked with Woolfson in his sequel to Tales of Mystery and Imagination, (appropriately) entitled, Poe.

Balsamo, was "discovered" by Woolfson, who heard about Balsamo's talents while in production of Jesus Christ Superstar; a performance that is said to have moved Weber to tears. Here's his performance or Gethsemane....

I have always preferred the studio recording, but both are very good and the soundtrack features an extra song. The studio version however has Ian Gillan in the role of Jesus while the soundtrack features Ted Neely. Several years ago I saw the stage version, featuring Neely and I was totally blown away by the show. It was also on December 22nd and had snowed that day so the Christmas thing was really happening that day. Great music and a great experience, can't wait for the movie to appear on bluray.

Ever visit Toronto BR? The Trinity church is located in the center of the downtown's largest shopping center. The Eaton Center. I really like Double Fantasy quite a lot. I scared one of my friends recently when I told him I even like most of the Yoko tracks on it.

I've been listening to ambient music, and prior to this last week I had only listened to a smattering of it. I like it much more than I expected, especially the Eno stuff:

Double Fantasy actually got hammered by the critics when it was released. Of course, following his death, they were afraid of seeming too harsh and eased up on it. I can get through the Yoko stuff, but that's about it. She actually did an ok job of back ups on Woman.

I went through a big trip-hop/ambient phase. I still listen to some of that stuff from time to time. Have you heard any Thievery Corporation?

Hey, Stone: If you like the Ambient Music series by Eno, you might wanna check out this disc by Eno and Fripp. It's called Evening Star, and is a very clever mix of looped guitar and other electronics, sorta reminiscent (in my mist humble of opinion) of Eno's work with Roxy Music.

I remember reading some liner notes on one of the Eno albums once, where the composer remarked that his music should be played at the very threshold between just audible and loud enough to pay attention to if desired. Try this out and lemme know what you think....

I've been listening to this one a bunch lately. I'm really surprised I like it as much as I do because I tend to find electronic music less satisfying. This one is not dance or beat driven, which is a big plus for me. It somehow conjures an organic feel and keeps a mix of tension & dread and childlike wonder going. The vocals are kinda heavily accented, but it adds to the feel in a good way. I find it real engaging. I put a track on my 2009 Comp which you can hunt down, if you like.

Not sure how many free downloads I've accumulated through amazon. I never thought I'd use'em til yesterday when I was making a comp of "things I've heard on tv and at the movies". I saw the Larry Clark movie "Bully" several months ago and since then I've wanted to find the music at the end. As it turns out, it's two Fatboy Slim tracks Song for Shelter which slips into Talking 'Bout My Baby. Used the free downloads and now I can't get "under the big bright yellow sun" out of my head. It's weird because I haven't had an interest in this style of music in several years, but these are weird times.

They got their fire back in a HUGE way. All the hooks and breakdowns you would expect, with some different sounding guitar work thrown in here and there. Alot of old school influence unabashedly coming through.

I took a trip up to see some relatives in northern MN this week, so a significant portion of my listening came via the tape deck. On my way out of town, I thrifted just enough cassettes to make it there and back. Most of these I have on other mediums but it was nice to get reacquainted with them:

Yo La Tengo - Fakebook
--"Barnaby, Hardly Working" and their cover of the Flamin' Groovies "You Tore Me Down" are about the most splendid things I know of right now.
Björk - Debut
--I had totally forgotten what a massive pop jam "Big Time Sensuality" is!
Tom Waits - Swordfishtrombones
--"Gonna whittle you inna kindling!"
Archie Shepp - Four For Trane
Champion Jack Dupree - Blues from the Gutter
Echo & the Bunnymen - s/t
The Feelies - Only Life
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Chronicle
Silvio Rodríguez - Cuba Classics 1/Canciónes Urgentes
Hammerhead - Into the Vortex
Prince Paul - A Prince Among Thieves
--the beats are aight but the "concept"/rapping suxxx
Edith Piaf - some budget compilation

Stevie Ray Vaughn & Albert King, Sessions. What a great album. Sound quality is great, recorded live in a studio. The bit of conversation between songs and a couple of Albert's stories makes the event the more special. The tasty keys of Tony Llorens is worth mentioning as well. I don't know if Llorens is King's regular but several of King's songs on another album I have includes tasty keys as well. I need to get more Albert King, I like him a lot and any one who likes Blues who don't have any better get up and run to the music store. This Sessions album is out of print and there weren't many available.

The other day, I was thumbing through a few spins and found this tasty treat. The sound is a wonderful funk burn of jazz, fusion, psychedelia and world-beat electronica. The musician-ship is really quite good--no mindless bumbling and pretentious noodling about. These kids know what the heck they're doing...and apparently they've been at it for awhile: since 1988 or thereabouts. The recording is also very fine, with lots happening between and around the channels, making headphone listening a real feast for the ears. Since listening to this morsel, I have checked out a couple of their earlier albums (this was released last year). They are no slouch on the ears either, and indicate a maturity and depth that encourages me that these guys will be here for awhile...

Anathallo - Floating World

Nice little album from this group from my state of Michigan. I think it's best when they use drums, and overall this has a nice feel, although it is a bit consistent.

Noob, I just listened to that June Christy Cd on amazon. Its awesome. I've got very varied tastes and have come to really appreciate vocal music like that. That type of music sounds awesome on Maggies. I'm going to order that album on the remastered Cd. Check out www.eastwindimports.com if you like that type of music as well as jazz, big band, and classical. Most of the recordings are pristine and many are on SACD, XRCD 24 and LP's. There's plenty of Chet Baker too!

blackraven...That's great that you got some value from this thread. I have, too. June's signature album was Something Cool, so if you're interested you might want to check it out.

Back when I was barely housebroken, my dad had a collection of 8-Track tapes and a player. Among them was the music of Petula Clarke, Johnny Cash and Burt Bacharach as representatives of his interest in current music. He was especially fond of classical, and an assortment of Verdi, Puccini, Beethoven and others spilled into the mix, heavily influencing my tastes for years to come.

Getting back to the Hit Parade, one of the stand-out musicians at that time, is one I turn to now and then when I am wistful and thinking back: Mr. Roger Williams. Although Ferante and Teicher fans may balk at my saying so, Williams' piano playing was among the best in the business. He collaborated with a number of well-regarded composers and performers, including John Barry (of Born Free and James Bond note) and Andy Williams. Even today, listening to Williams' and Barry's Born Free makes me quite teary, a guilty pleasure I shouldn't tell you about lest you toss me out of the cool club, beverage and all (careful!).

Here is a clip of the mighty and dexterous Mr. Williams doing Autumn Leaves. I just found it recently, and it astounds me even as I write.

Enjoy!

Man I cleaned off a Ray Charles LP out of a stack of wax I acquired some time back and was it good. It was some of his older more Blues stuff.. It gave me a whole new respect for Ray. The vinyl was a bit rough and sometimes I don't tolerate it but I couldn't pull the needle off this one. I'll have to find the title and see if there's a better copy out there some where.

I picked up the new Lady Antebellum album. This dynamic duo seems to be Country's new big thing. The album is a good listen. Doesn't seem very Country to me. The first single Need You Now is an excellent song. I also enjoy their style of song structure, sometimes female vocals, sometimes male and sometimes harmony. this new release was only $7.99 on Amazon may want to give them a listen.

I also have my first Govt. Mule on deck. I think I'm going to like this really well. It's High And Mighty. Other recs would be appreciated for Govt. Mule.

I also listened to Halestorm which is a more straight forward Hard Rocking debut album. They have a female singer. It's one of those bands that's almost Hard Pop opposed to Rock but I liked it, the songs are catchy and good energy when in that mood.

Lady Antebellum are from Toronto. They are going through the same motions Blue Rodeo did. Huge club buzz, and finally a big label deal.

Massive Attack: Heligoland

I'm really liking this one. I'm a big Massive Attack fan so don't know how objective I am, but I'd say if you like 'em at all this is more than worth a listen. Since their albums all seem to ave a distinctive mood, hard to really make comparisons, but it is pretty gloomy, but more beat heavy than something like 100th Window. Maybe most similar to Mezzanine but with a more tribal feel to the beats. This is gonna get a lot of plays.
