    What does volume do?

When you turn that volume knob, what's actually happening? The amount of power given to the amp changes, or what?

Skeptic can probably give you a more indepth answer, but in essence the volume controls the amount of current going to the amplifier.

A volume control is basically a voltage divider.

It controls the amount of voltage that is passed from the preamp section to the power amp section.

Since voltage is a component of power (P=V*I or P=V*V/R), power is also controlled, by the square of the signal voltage (for a given Rspeaker impedance).

You can think of volume control as a faucet that controls the output of a water reserve.
