    Swiching tweeters in same boxes

I always woundered about this but what will happen if you change the titanium laminated tweeter that was in a 4000hz crossover in the speaker box to a Polycarbonated tweeter that was normaly made for 6000hz in the same type of box? What I mean is is it ok to take the orginal tweeter that was connected to a 4000hz crossover out and put a different tweeter that is the same size and shape but the different tweeter was connected to a 6000hz crossover.

Well basicaly I want to swich tweeters from titanium to polycarbonate and both are the exact same shape and size. The only thing I was wondering is that is it ok to connect the Polycarbonated dome tweeters to the crossover that is 4000hz? I do know that my HLS410 uses Poly and the crossover is 3000hz so I would assume that it's ok to swich tweeters if it's 4000hz. But the Poly tweeter I was talking about was normaly connected to a speaker that is 6000hz so that's why I wanted to know if 4000hz is ok and wont harm it. I think it wont do any damage but I would like to know.

big step ahead for spanky: he finally typed "wondering" right...

don't just switch tweeters, especially not when you don't know anything about speakers,

why switch it?? are you unhappy with your speakers?? then do something about that,
for instance, buy new ones, this time, good ones...

Well I do know about the Control 1's alot and according to the inside the tweeters size and shape is the exact same and I like the poly domes better then titanium. I just wanted to know that if it's ok to change them since they both came from the control 1 series and one is just a older model and one is newer and the older one is the control 1 that pros use.

here is a situation where specs are required...
if the poly tweeter is rated down past 4khz, then it will be ok, however it may not sound good...

Ok here's the thing I wanted to do. What I wanted to do is to make my Control 1Xtreme to sound closest to the orginal Control 1 from pros since I really liked the sound of the pros and according to what I hear through my ears is the only difference in the two is the tweeters since the highs sound different because mine is titanium laminated and the pros are polycarbonated.

No, it is not ok. The crossover points are different and as such you may damage a tweeter that was designed to be crossed at 6k by putting it into a circuit that is crossed at 4k. Conversely, if you put a tweeter designed to be crossed at 4k into a circuit that is crossed at 6k you will have a hole in the frequency response as the new tweeter is not capable of a response low enough to reach the crossover point.

You do not arbitrarily go changing drivers from box to box. There is a tremendous amount of engineering that goes into making a complete speaker system.

Of course, all of what I said above is moot as they are your speakers and you can do whatever you like. But it will sound worse than it now does and you will probably end up damaging something.

But if you say that having 4000hz will damage the poly tweeters then why the JBL HLS410 tweeters crossover at 3000hz which is even lower and they are the same type or tweeters as the orginal control 1's meaning both are Polycarbonated dome tweeters.

Just because it is a certain type of tweeter, doesn't mean it's the same -- there's all sorts of different specs associated with a tweeter -- sensitivity, breakup point, Q. Don't just go swapping tweeters in there willy nilly. Do a little research first. Crossovers are a very difficult subject area -- some companies reputation are mostly on their crossovers.

I hate to brake this news to you....but there has never been a pro that used those crappy JBL speakers for anything but a doorstop.

And no, you can't just swap the tweeters without matching the crossovers.

I can say one thing for sure is that even the specs are soo different the speakers size and shape and the box of the speakers are exactly the same. How do I know is since I use to have the orginal Control 1 from pro. They just lable the same speakers differently but the size of the woofer and shape and the tweeter size and shape it exactly the same even the box is. The biggest difference is the tweeters meteral and the crossover.

I also can say that the control 1 from pro is Sensitivity: 87dB 1W, 1m
Nominal Impedance: 4 Ohms but since the control 1Xtremes have 8 ohms the sensitivity is 89db instead of 87db so both will produce the same amount of sensitivity power overall when you listen since it's basicaly they take away the sensitivity since the ohms is lower but on the other speakers the ohms is higher so they add more sensitivity.

No, not the speakers' specs, the tweeters' specs, like this. If you go looking around that site and compare the tweeters' specs, you'll see how different they can be. Then go and look up what all the terms mean (Vas, Qts, etc.).

hey guys, I like the tweeter in my dad's B&W'smore than the tweeter in my advents, can I switch them???
they're about the same size but have a different color...

    Spanky,
    please stop it...

'simple' questions deserve simple answers so:
simple question: Can I just switch the tweeters?

simple answer: NO, YOU CAN NOT 'JUST' SWITCH TWEETERS!!

    simple enough?

    now shut up!

    DON'T DO IT!

Not all polycarbonated tweeters are created equal. You can't just switch them and expect the same results.
Here is some light reading you should do before changing anything.

    Here....wait a second.

Spanking: Yes, it is ok to swap the tweeters. Go ahead, enjoy yourself.

You asked a question, you got answers from people that, quite obviously, know a great deal more about this stuff that you probably ever will, yet you seem insistant on believing otherwise. So, do whatever you want, it's your equipment. If you are looking for someone to agree with your premise, you are not going to find it here, because, quite simply, you are wrong. Please don't keep beating this horse. All you are really doing is making a fool of yourself. Change the tweeters.

If you truly want to learn, ask questions, then listen to what you are being told. There is probably 100 years of experience in hi fi just within the people that have responded to this single thread. Heck, I've got 40+ myself. But don't ask things and not utilize the infomation you are given. If nothing else, its just plain rude.
