Suggestions for Floor speakers and Receiver?

I would like to replace the Logitech z2300 computer speakers I have connected directly to my TV with a decent receiver and pair of floor speakers.

I would like to keep the speaker cost under $500 for the pair and the receiver within $300.

Of course the smaller the price the better.

I plan on using this for the occasional movie or game, or listening to music. I would like the receiver to be good enough to where eventually I could use it to expand to a full 5.1 or 7.1 system with 1080p capabilities. For now, though, 2 floor speakers is sufficient.

If anyone has any suggestions for the best bang for my buck, let me know!

'Round here several of us like the Onkyo TX-SR606, which is in that price range if you don't mind a refurb. It's unusual in this price range in that it supports the high-definition audio formats found on Blu-ray. For the speakers, it seems like we could argue all day.

You can find PSB Image 45 Towers for $500 online. These are superior to the Alpha's mentioned earlier.

How do a pair of Polk Audio speakers compare to the ones previously mentioned? I am talking about http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....ci_sku=8828094. Or the ones a step down from these (i think they are about $100 less per speaker.)

Have not heard the Polks, but I would seriously doubt they are even close in performance to any of the other brands mentioned previously. I have heard other Polk speakers in that price range and they did not sound good. And typically, the bass response is just not good at all. Other than the Lsi series which is significantly more expensive, I would pass on Polk.

In that price range I would rather look at Klipsch or Energy. But, take a listen and if you like it, buy it.

The Wharfedale Diamonds have my vote, the 9.4's for $360(pr), or the 8.3's for $210 (pr).

Refurbs are a grest deal. I recently bought a NAD T754 from Spearit Sound for $499. But it may not have the video support (no HDMI) your looking for, plus it's5.1 or 6.1, no 7.1.

If upconverting video via HDMI is not a concern, audio advisor has a Marantz 4002 for $349 (new but last year's model). It has HDMI switching, but doesn't upconvert. A friend of mine bought one and is really happy with it, plus it has a 24 bit 192 khz DAC built in.

If you need to spend less, you could buy a refurb Harmon Kardon, I had an older model than listed here, but I was happy with it and still have it.
