Subwoofers

What is the optimum size for a subwoofer? current system Boston Acoustics Center MRCB micro, Boston CR67 100 watts front, CR57 75 watts rears, mostly easy listening and movies. Yamaha RX-V461 AV Receiver. I have a old Sony 8" subwoofer but have finally moved up to a LCD widescreen and am wondering if another sub would improve the sound for movie watching without having to turn up the volume. I know my system is basic but it meets my needs.

What size room do you have and how much do you want to spend?
Is it mainly for HT use or mostly music or 50-50?

Are you wanting deeper bass, tighter bass or just plain louder? You may just need a sub with more power, a larger sub or both.

Room size is important, you need to know how much air to move. You can't really buy a sub on amp power or woofer size because the drivers themselves vary in sensitivity so one sub at 100 watts might play twice as loud as another at 100 watts. The louder one having the more efficient or sensitive woofer. Also, a ported box will need less power than a sealed box.

If wanting two subs you should get matching subs. Some based on what I said above but more so each if different will have different response curves and may make sound worse.

Check out www.svsound.com good subs and they will help you pick a sub. I think the least expensive is about $569.00 so if that's more than your budget.....

You could buy a new larger sub for the sub out (LFE) and run your old sub either with mains or center channel. Find you a 15" or 12". I've even heard of people running a sub on the rear surrounds. If you run a sub on any main channel like this you want to be sure to set the receiver's speaker setup for said channel to "large" so the sub will receive the proper frequencies.

Reference subwoofers. Greatroom listening space is 17' x 15'. I am wanting a deeper bass without having to turn the volume way up. I don't want to disturb the neighbors but I want to hear the booms and crashes in my movies. Star Trek, Star Wars, Matrix along that genre. Also the budget is tight and my better half in nervous. If you can swing it the Martin Logan, Dynamo would be a great option. If not, one of the smaller ones along with the one you have will help.

in question is the Jamo Sub-300 the specs goes like this
Woofer 10"
rated ed output 300-watt
frequency range 28-150.. i need help with this ONE>>>>>
Impedance (OHM) 22K???? is it the same as four to eight ohms ?? you could check here.www.jamo.com for the SUB-300

Sounds like the input impedance to me.

The DEF TEC super cube is one mean sub. That will go below 30hz

That spec is for the line level inputs. It has nothing to do with the actual impedance measured at the speaker level inputs. In any case, when using a sub woofer with a built in amplifier the input impedance is a non issue.
