Subwoofer Recommendation Please

Hi all,

Old school guy slowly embracing the new millenia. I have an older stereo system which I really like and do not want to change (old Adcom 200W Amp and Tuner/Preamp combo unit). Finally replaced my old AR speakers with Infintiy Beta50's (fine considering $600/pr). Bi-wired configuration.

Mainly listen to blues/jazz and 70's - 90's rock (grew up on "hair" bands and still like 'em).

I'd greatly appreciate recommendations on a sub $400 subwoofer (good sale going on, etc.). The Adcom equipemnt is old (~20 years) and there is no "surround sound", subwoofer output, etc. I'll need to make sure I get a powered subwoofer with the "right connection scheme", right?

yes, you'll need speaker line in levels, like these.

there are 2 ways to connect them, the first, as in the wharfedale sub. from the amp, to the speakers, and from the speakers to the sub,
or like in the b&w sub, from the amp, to the sub, and from the sub speaker line level out's to the speakers.

in either ways, you are not powering the sub with the amp, and the sub isn't powering the speakers, the speaker inputs are just high level inputs.

The Titanic kits probably would not be ideal in this case because their plate amps don't include speaker level inputs. They can work with a line level output from the preamp (such as the tape monitor/rec out), but then they lack the option of using a high pass filter to cut off the lower bass from the main speakers.

The B&W that basite referred to is probably a more attractive alternative with a two-channel setup because it provides speaker level inputs and includes a high pass filter (cutoff at 80 Hz) for both the speaker level and line level inputs/outputs. Not a lot of subwoofers in this price range allow for this, so something to keep in mind.

Finally narrowed it down to the Hsu STF-2 and the on the Martin Logan Dynamo. Both can be had at this time for $399.

Currnet location is small (10x10) but may move to a larger room.
