I 2nd the Titanic subs. I own the 10" & 15". The kits are super easy to put together and they are very nice sounding subs. The 15" is kinda big......Ok it's a freakin' beast

If you don't have the room, the 12" for under $500 is a good deal.

Check out the PSB Subseries subs...they are right around your price-range anyway and will completely blow away both the Yamaha and the Polk.

Definately go with the Parts Express sub kits. They are on sale now,
and $50 off of shipping. The free shipping on their web site is an error. I spent $12.50 on UPS ground from Ohio to So California,
which is pretty cheap considering the weight. Over 60 lbs.

About a year ago I ordered a 10" Dayton Titanic MKIII for $288.00 total
(it was on sale w/free shipping).

It's quite an impressive sub. Weighs in at about 64lbs, with a 230w
power amp. A few weeks ago I ordered a second 10" Dayton
sub kit. It's extremely easy to assemble....9 screws to mount the
plate amp, insert foam if needed (good to have adhesive spray for this), and strip the two wires from the amp, and connect to the driver.
(9 allen hed screws to connect the driver to the enclosure). Install
the 4 (included) spiked feet if you feel that is necessary.

I use the two 10' Subs in a smaller, second home theater. The extra
one I bought gives me more output, and both are good down to
    30 hz. (and that's conservative). The 12' and 15" from what I've
read are a very good deal....GMichael knows what he's talkin'
about. For the money a Polk, or especially a Yamaha can't come
    close in perfermance.

Good luck with whatever you decide........vardo

    Subs

I've been looking at them titanic subs for awhile now and im thinking about getting the 15'' for my HT room. I just wander if it will sound a lot better than my paradigm ps1000 that im useing now. I dont want to spend a lot of money and here no difference. From what i can see on the web site they look like pretty nice subs and yes they have knocked a few bucks off them. I also wonder if my 18by12 room is to small for a 15''. As for your ? i would not be scared to give that 10'' titanic a try, I just wish i could listen to one before buying,

I don't know much about Paradigm subs, the ps1000 seems to be
a very nice sub from what I've read. Assuming you have a 18 x12 room
with maybe 8' high ceilings, your looking at a little over 1700 cu ft.
A 15" titanic sub definately would be overkill for that size of room.
As for the 10" Sub, all I can say it's a pretty good deal, and goes down
to 30Hz. It's fast and musical. Driver is massive...link:

I have never owned a Paradigm speaker or sub. I've heard numerous
Paradigm speakers at Shelly's Audio in So Calif. and was very
impressed with there sound quality. Their top of the line sub is
extremely well regarded, but it's mighty expensive....you can try the
Parts Express 10" kit and see how you like it...but I think the Paridigm
sub would be just as good, and maybe hit a little lower (25 Hz verses
    30 Hz).........good luck, vardo

Yea, the 15'' might be to much, but im looking for a sub that plays lower than the ps1000 and i think that 15'' would surely do that, maybe i should take a closer look at the 12''. I will have to think this over awhile, I wander what the ps1000 would sound like paired up with the 10'' titanic one sealed one rear ported.

These High Fidelity Subwoofers are worth looking at also. They don't handle as many watts but have a cleaner sound.

I would go with the JBL S120 for this price range. $295 on Next Tag. 76dB at 20Hz and an average of 105dB from 25 to 62Hz.

Wink Not to sure to be honest

If i was planning for a subwoofer. I would maybe go for makes like b&w or REL because they have a good rumble sound to it. But personely i would go for rel coz they are good quality subs with good sound and you can bye them in differnt sizes to your your needs. Even the smallest rel sub would satisfy me in my medium living.

Thats the best i can say

While I don't currently own one, I have quite a bit of experience with Velodyne has I have installed systems for quite a few people and I typically go with Velodyne because they are right around the mid-range price-wise and they offer a huge selection ranging from small compact little boomers to huge beasts that deliver massive heart-stopping bass.
