Speakers to go with the Cambridge 740A Amp
I was wondering if anyone could suggest some speakers that might go well with the Cambridge amp, the 740A. I'm still undecided as whether to go book shelf or floor speakers. I know that its very much a matter of personal taste however i believe that there are some combinations that are better than others. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

3 things we need to know. What's your budget, room size and musical likes and dislikes?

thanks for responding. room size is about 9m by 7m. My budget is about $1500 Australian.
My Musical tastes are varied. From wall of sound death metal, Devin Townsend band, Meshugah etc to the Bach Cello suites.....lots of Classical vocal music, quite a bit of Jazz, Pat Metheny, Mike Stern etc. A very broad spectrum. Also i will play TV and dvds through the speakers as well. thanks so much for your time.

    B&W 685's, 684's and 683's. Monitor Audio S2 or S6, PSB Image T55, NHT Classic 3
Thats a big room to fill. If you go with Bookshelf speaks you will definitely need a sub.
The Monitor audio S2 has very good bass for a bookshelf and uses a 7" woofer.

Monitor Audio has an updated Series called the RS and make an RS5 as well as an RS6.
You may be able to find discounts on the S series.

Can you give us an idea of what brands are available in your area for audition. Hate to recommend something that you can't listen to in person. I know we have a couple other Aussie members here and hopefully they can give you some advice if they're in your area.

The B&W 683 and 684 are floorstanding speakers. I agree with Blackraven, they are a good choice.

Try and go with the 683's over the 684's if you decide to go with B&W's. They have a fuller sound with better bass for about $300-400 more.

The latest issue of The Absolute Sound (Sept) lists "Seven Complete High-End Budget Systems". The system named "Planar Pleasures" for $4498 has the Cambridge 740a with the Magnepan 1.6QR or the MartinLogan Source speakers and the Simaudio Moon CD-1 Cd Player with Alpha interconnects and speaker cables.
