I would consider these PSB Alpha B1's at the bottom right of this page-

    Read the review- http://www.stereophile.com/standloud...psb/index.html

Then consider that digital amp from parts express that I mentioned earlier. Or consider the powered speakers mentioned in previous posts.

I would also look at these KEF's and Boston Acoustics-

The Bostons have a slightly warmer sound and decent bass with the 6.5" woofer. They are a pretty good budget speaker.

I'll second the PSB Alpha B1 - the Alpha B has been a great budget speakers for over a decade. And at the discount price will be difficult to beat.

That said I would also peruse your local Pawn shop - you never know what someone has traded in and for a $100 you'll probably do better than the Polks - who knows you might find a used pair of Alpha Bs for $50. I managed a pair of Tannoys for $60 and they're in great shape - the boxes are a little scuffed up but nothing wrong sonically. Saw a nice set of DM Series B&Ws for $150 not long ago which was somewhat tempting as it was one of the acceptable sounding B&Ws to me. But PSB and Paradigm are all over the used markets here and in the pawn shops. But I'm in Canada and they're Canadian - but in the States with the recession there is bound to be a lot of people selling off their stereos.
