No Baffle over Open Baffle Full Rangers
No baffle four inch neodymium full range drivers over open baffle 17inch Sansui full range woofers. System is bi-amped with SET tube amp for upper frequencies and solid state for lower frequencies.

What's the advantage of no baffle instead of open baffle?

If you physically attach a speaker to a board there will be some resonance and coloration. The idea here is to minimize these for the main driver. I would also like to try magnet mounting the Alphas without a solid attachment to the lower baffle and an 8 inch wide bander in the "hanging by a thread configuration".

I've heard the "no baffle" speakers in the link below and they were outstanding. They were best enjoyed with eyes wide shut. :-)

These inexpensive 8 inch full rangers from Parts Express sound much better than the 4 inchers. Next I'll try a pair of 4.5 Fostex full rangers.

Would a Tripath chip amp adequately drive these? Redefining bang-for-the-buck.

The SET amp I use for the main driver makes all of 2.5 wpc. Full range high efficiency speakers love T-amps.

So how does the fostex sound in this configuration?

The Fostexs are better than the others, more detailed and the vibes from "Jazz at the Pawnshop" CD floated all over my garage this evening. I pulled them out of the Frugal Horns MkIII where they really work best and now they must go back.

If you guys were motivated you could build better than my humble efforts. Being retired with a garage and a few tools helps.

I'm interested in combining art and audio. A flat open baffle speaker could make a nice canvas.
