    Looking at 5.1 speakers $600-650(usd)
I'm getting a new TV soon - 76cm 16:9 or 4:3 81cm. So I will need some some decent sound. After I get the TV I'll have $600-650USD (I'm actually in Australia, I converted my budget into USD for this forum) to spend on speakers, and reciever. What do you audio pros think I should get?.

    Thanks

    Melburn,

I'm in the same position you are. I want to spend less than $1000 CDN on my audio/dvd system, but I don't want to go the HTIB route. Here are some options I'm currently considering -- note I said considering, not recommending ;)

fluance 5 speaker system: US $259.99
    http://www.fluance.com/fluan5speaks.html

streem 5 speaker system: US $399.95
    http://www.streemspeakers.com/ht-33.asp

Rocket by Onix ELT LRS Satellite: US $129.00 per pair
    http://www.av123.com/products_produc...s&product=32.1

Dayton Shielded BR-1 2-WAY Monitor Kit: US $149.80 per pair
    http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshow...number=300-642

Athena Technologies Audition Series 5-1/2" 2-Way: $154.98 per pair
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1051806301325

for a sub, consider the Dayton 10" 100 watt powered sub: US $124.88

Before I started writing this reply to your post, I was actually leaning towards the streem 5 speaker package, but I'm now really starting to like the look of the Rocket ELTs :)

Well, I hope I have enough info here for people with much more knowledge than I have to continue the discussion. Good luck!

Here's another set you can add to your list:

ACOUSTIC RESEARCH HC6 Home Theater Speaker System: US $269.88
    http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=2455237

I live in Canada, and I think the shipping and border fees on the Rockets would make them too expensive to compete with the other sets.... I'm now leaning toward the AR HC6 system. I wish the deal with av123 for Canadians was still happening, because I would snap the Rockets up in a second.

Best buy has the ASB1s on sale for $89 a pair.3pair is looking at $270 plus the Dayton sub leaves you $200 for a reciever.IMO this has to be one of the best bang for the buck systems period.

I saw that sale! Unfortunately, I live in Canada, and Best Buy bought futureshop up here, which already carried the Athena line, so they don't. However, Futureshop does not seem to be having the same sale :(.

Look around on ebay you can find some good used stuff for a fraction of what new stuff costs. I got all of my speakers used for about $600.00 they are all paradigms.
left and right fronts are lcr 150's
    center is a cc 170
left and right rears are adp 150's
and the rear center is also lcr 150
I think my system rocks!! GOOD LUCK
