Bookshelfs for THIS situation

Hey guys, first post here, go easy on me.

First of all, here's the space I have to work with:



I'm currently running a pretty cheap setup using Polk RM6750 (4 mains, center and subwoofer). My old big JBLs just didn't fit in the new bookshelf/entertainment rig and these are getting me by in the meantime.

I have about 14"-16" of height to work with on my bookshelf high adjustment to fit my main speakers in. My receiver is a pretty old Nakamichi AV300. 70 or 80 Watts/channel IIRC.

The Nak has a phantom center channel mode that works pretty well, so I'm mainly looking for a nice set of smaller mains that fir my 14"-16" height window.

So I need something that is going to sound decent actually sitting IN a bookshelf.

My price limit is ideally $200-$400-ish. I'm guessing I want something front ported, right?

Because of the limited enclosed space, a bookshlef that's either sealed or front ported would be best. Klipsch' make pretty good, reasonably priced bookshelf speakers with front ports and the tweeters would be just above ear level in your cabinet. They're also very efficient.

Hadn't thought of Klipsch - I will check into them.

One that stood out as a possibility was a pair of B&W DM601s - I may be able to grab a used pair in my price range and the size looks right. I have seen most mounted on stands, but B&W listed wall mounting as a possibilty IIRC.

Tough set-up. PSB Alpha and Image are front ported speakers in your price range. NHT's Absolute Zero are acoustic suspension and shouldn't be bothered by that location.

I noticed the NHT Zeros are 6 ohm. Any guesses on how my old 70W (8 ohm) Nak would do on them to fill my 20' long x 12' room?

I'm not a "turn the volume up to 11" type of guy - mostly due to my wife.

You might also look at the Paradigm Atom or next step up. I was helping a guy put a system together who had a center, the Atoms fit great. I'm not sure how they are ported.

Your amp should drive 6ohms without problems, its 4ohms you may have to worry about.
You will need a sub woofer with any speaker you purchase to fit that size.

Looks like the Atoms are rear ported.

I'm going to go try to listen to B&W 600 series and NHT Absolute Zero today. Chances are slim that either shop will have a bookcase for me to bury them in, but who knows.
