Bought these for 5 bucks yesterday. Haven't hooked them up yet. Am I to believe that's a full range driver?

Those look like little stools with a cushion on top, lol!

At first glance I thought they were omni-directional speakers but it does not appear there is an inverted cone on the speaker top to deflect the sound throught the ports on the side. I had a similar size omni-directional pair of speakers that probably came off of what passed for a "mini-system" back in the day. I was a bit surprised how well they sounded so who knows you might have stumbled across a interesting conversation piece. I would think though without the cone pointed down over the woofer the sound is going to get absorbed into the top and produce a somewhat muffled sound. If there are no cones you may want to consider "modifying" them by gluing your own cone to the tops so they can disperse the sound. Probably would only take a trip to a local craft store,some glue and about 5 minutes of your time. But then again you already have great speakers......

The top has 4 holes cut out, and then covered with the fabric. Check pic 4. I'll plug em in today, certainly am not expecting anything.

I have a pair of W8-1808's on a UPS truck as we speak. It took some guts and belief in OB/Full Rangers to ante up that much cash for a pair of naked drivers. The cheaper stuff got me started in the right direction.

What made you choose them? Price and good looks or did you see recommendation for them somewhere? You plan to use them OB style? I've just been modeling them with Win ISD (having nothing else to do on this boring day). They appear to bea meant for vented enclosures. I can't seem to model a box for them that will give them any low end, and that's with a vented box. In OB, be prepared to have very little bass from these, pairing them with a subwoofer will no doubt be obligatory if you want any output under 100Hz.

edit: I was modelling the W8-1772 which happens to look exactly the same as yours but has different specs. I'll give it a go on WinISD.

The 1808 has a higher qts and is the better choice of the two for OB. The 1808 is also great in vented enclosures. There's a guy on ebay selling it in a 48 inch bib cab for major bucks. Lots of buzz on several audio forums ( DIY, AC etc.) regarding the 1808 in OB's.

I wish the 1808 was as efficient as the 1772 but it's not bad at 93db. I'll try them in my OB folding U baffles with a sub.

I saw your DIY TB's and they look nice.

Last question, are you planning on wiring the Tang Bands straight to the amp or do have some kind of network you plan to use?

Poppa, if you run across a pair of speakers that just say "Ohm" on them, then you'll have a true omnidirectional. These tend to get rather beat up by the time they make it to the thrift stores, and most people don't know what they are, so you can sometimes find them for pennies on the dollar. By the way, here's their website: OhmSpeakers.com, and they will service anything they've ever made. Good folks there.

Hey audio amateur,

The purist would probably solder speaker wires directly to the TB terminals but since I'll be moving them from room to room I'll do some binding posts that accept bananas. I won't be using any crossovers or any bass helpers just a fast little sub off my preamp. Did you use internal hook up wires with your DIY speakers? I wonder if it matters?

Currently I am running crappy wires from the binding posts to the actual TB drivers. I am unhappy with the sound, and im still debating whether or not I am going to add a tweeter or not. It's hard to tell what I need. I will probably change the speaker wires inside either way, but I doubt they are the cause of the dissatisfactory sound. I am abroad at university at the moment and until my next break, I can't mess with the speakers as they are back home at my parent's house.
However, I am really gaining interest in Open Baffle. Could you provide with some usuful links?
