Some Old Pics of the Monitor Audio GR60s

The system has changed considerably since these were taken, but its fun to look back and see how I had things set up back then

The GR60 ws not reviewed in the States to the best of my knowledge. The RS6 and RS8 were, but either of those are well below the GR60 in terms of performance.

At the time when I forked over the cash for the GR60s - a lot for me and I didn't buy them second hand - I had heard many speakers at length, and lusted after a few that were just beyond my price range. I heard the GR60s at the Good Guys of all places and familiarized myself with their sound over several weeks. It was interesting to note how they trounced Energy's top model which was considerably more expensive. As most Good Guys alumni that worked in the hi-fi dept will tell you, the GR60 was by far the best speaker they ever carried. After much listening I finally took the plunge and bought them.

Its only when you listen to the very best speakers that you realize the GR60s do miss quite a bit of information, and are coloured to offer a certain balance that is always engaging. They also cannot generate the sense of scale that say the R107 can. I say this although they are more detailed than a host of other speakers under 10k. They are fast, coherent and dynamic given their size - almost electrostatic-like. They have a slightly warm full-bodied balance and are very enjoyable without causing fatigue.

Cheers Ajani - I know your close to getting your GS60s. I'd get the piano black ones at this point, although the Rosewood finish is very nice. I hope you get them soon - trust me you'll be rockin' to the music too much!

    Nice rig.

What are those squares the speakers are sitting on? Wood? I have mine on similar squares of hardwood with a spiked screw in each corner that allows me to adjust level and plumb. Are you using it to decouple from the floor?

The speakers are decoupled from the 'suspended' floor on an Irish Limestone flooring tile/paver (from Co. Clare I think). A friend of mine happens to be one of the leading distributors for custom tile mosaic and stone in the US. I took the opportunity to go down to one of his showrooms and also one of his warehouses to test the resonance and solidity of different types, of which there are many in a roughly 1ftx2ft size. This particular type struck me for its dead sound when I 'rapped' it with my knuckles - some have a certain type of 'thunk' that seems to indicate a higher resonance. They are almost 3/4 inch thick and weigh about 40lbs ea (just wieghed them on the scales). They provide a substantial solid base for the speaker, and bass performance is improved, and clarity in general is improved.

Haha okay, yeah somehow it reminds me of something out of Austin Powers. So.. Any chance of us getting to see some of your current setup?

I still have to take pics of the current setup - my son is the one with the digital camera so have to wait for him to come over and take them. Bert your setup looks very nice too!
