Infinity QE Speakers...Return or Repair? **PICS**

I was at the local thrift shop looking for a cheap amp and I came across these speakers. i know next to nothing about speakers but recognized the brand name and grabbed them. I have been googling and have found some more information on them but not quite what I need.

I picked them up for $20.00. The EMIT Tweeters are in good condition but one of the 8" bass cones is damaged. I don't know how to properly describe it so I'll post picks. The speakers are in good asthetic shape but I need to know:

1. How much is the repair going to cost?...if it's possible at all
2. Is the sound quality of the speakers really worth it?

Keep them !

all you have is a dented dustcap, it shouldn't even change the sound...

you can repair them if you find a replacement dustcap, dunno where to find the ones that exactly match these though, but your problem is aesthetical only anyways, so if you leave the grilles on the speakers, you won't even notice...

you can maybe 'suck it back out' again, by using a vacuum cleaner, but don't come too close to the dustcap though, you don't wanna break it completely...

But really keep the speakers, sound quality will be exellent for their money, they even have the EMT tweeters...

If the surrounds (at the edge of the cone, the 'ring' that keeps the cone 'attatched' to the speaker basket/gasket) is broken too, you should however refoam them, there are alot of refoam kits available, and it's really not that hard to do...

you can check www.simplyspeakers.com for the surrounds, and maybe for the dustcaps too if you want to repair that...

I guess as a follow up question...

I plugged them into the only 'sound system' in the house...its got to be at least 20 years old pioneer stereo amp, equalizer, and fm tuner...and they sound really bassy. I turned the bass knob down (from 0 to -5) and got pretty good sound. BUT when i tried to raise the volume i got a loud (and painful) popping. I really don't have any background in speakers but I am assumming the speakers were over-powered?

Any suggestions on how to fix the popping?

I can't take the amp I tested them on, so are there any suggestions as to an affordable (150 or lessish) amp that would help balance the bass?

You might want to check and see if the amp has a loudness button. Amps of that age usually will and you need to push the button to turn it off.

yeah, the loudness button is my primary suspect too...

popping...
do they still work? could be the the voice coil hitting the back plate (of the driver), which happens when there is too much excursion...

check the loudness button, and don't turn them up TOO loud, they'll get your hearing damaged if you do.
could be that the amp is dying too though, I remember my yamaha was 'popping' too when it died...

btw, which pioneer amp was it?

thanks guys...i checked th amp and it did have the loudness switch on. I'll try pluggig in the speakers later today (the unit is in my sisters room so I have to tear it apart when she isn't home).

basite - it's a "Pioneer Stereo Amplifier SA-950 Non-Switching AMP", "Pioneer Graphic Equalizer SG-550", and "Pioneer FM/AM Synthesized Tuner TX-950", and then theres a tape deck

figured out that the wiring to the equalizer was all messed up. Fixed it and tested the speakers and everything sounds great!

that is a great find!!! I have been looking for a pair of infinity's with the EMITs for a while now, even had a pair found and reserved,but the deal fell through.

have fun listening to your new setup. all you need now is a vintage amp and a source to be rockin.
