I need speaker advice

I have a party house on my hands and it seems we keep blowing our speakers.

The latest casualties were two MTX TP212's and two MTX TP112's, these lasted us a good 6 months before someone turned our amp up at a party and blew them.

Now I would like to find something affordable that can handle great big bursts of power. We are running all 4 off a QSC mx3000a amp since we got half a dozen for free a couple years ago. Also can anyone recommend a good place to buy cable in bulk? I got 16gauge cable and it kind of melted a couple times at the bannana plug from all the juice.

:idea: try less amps, it might be good for the speakers

Why not just buy active PA speakers (like some Mackies or JBLs), and keep your guests away from the volume slider?

The loudspeakers look interesting but at the close to $1000 each price tag I don't think thats in our price range.

Nope we live in the middle of a college town and we were fortunate to find these amps. The college redid its racks of audio a couple years ago and they threw out all the old racks. We got half a dozen QSC amps and another dozen Altec Lansing amps. Seeing as the QSC amps are THX and a bit more juicey we are using those.

I will look into getting some higher gauge cable.. and hiding the amp so no one can turn it up. We have a mixing board just for that reason.

Both of those speakers are rated at 500W program/1000W peak, but you want to set up your gear in a way that ensures that you won't be grossly exceding the program power rating (use one or two of your amps depending on how many speakers you have). You can use 1/4" audio cable with these instead of speaker wire. That should handle a bit more power.

Also I would recommend keeping your gear away from the guests (locked in a cabinet or something), because with those amps your have plenty of potential to blow something.

You got the amps, you need real cabling... and real speakers. You and your posse are obviously NOT interested in Sound Quality so go to the nearest local Music/Instrument Shop. Find some used JBL bins or Altec Lansing Bins. Make sure they've 15's and horns. Take them home and wake the dead...
