Take a look at audio engine, M-Audio, Paradigm shift speakers. As far as needing a 3mm connector, if the speakers come with a larger one, there are adapters available at radio shack, partsexpress.com and monoprice.com

    M-AUDIO - Reference Monitors

I second the Audio Engine speakers. they are very good sounding for a computer speaker and seem to be built rather well. They are powered speakers so all you would need to do is hook the laptop to them and enjoy.

I run a pair of Audio Engine 2 with an Audioquest Dragon Fly DAC from my computer with great results. Under $500-.

There are so many options for laptop speakers. Just visit the site eBay and chose the right system. You can go with brands like sony.
