my room isnt real big so I dont need big sound. Just high quality sound.
    What do you guys suggest?

    Speakers?
    receiver?

about the receiver...a mini one would do...I'm not about to do THX or any 5.1

    Thanks a lot

How much are you willing to spend?

What kind of music do you listen to? A bit of everything or just rap etc?

    I dont need much.
probably a 2 + a sub will be enough for me
unless there is another suggestion of configuration.

500$ isnt going to give much room for 2 mains and a sub. You can pick yourself up some good bookshelves for 500$. Athena, energy, polk, even jbl..bring your fav cds and go listen to what they have out there in you $$ range dont waste time on higher priced ones. and a receiver ??? shoot you might have to go the gently used way then....otherwise you're looking at a boombox set up for all 3 pieces

In the $500 neighborhood your best bet is to look at used speakers from Dynaudio, B&W, Def Tech, etc. For new ones, lets just say you will not get much output below 65 - 50Hz (nOrh 5.1, Ascend Acoustics CMT-340, Magnepan MMG, etc. ). A good subwoofer will easily eat up most of the $500. High quality and cheap (in this case, $500) do not mix. Used is by far your best bet.

I agree with Bryan. If you can find a Definitive Technology or other dealer that has speakers that you want, you may want to try to purchase the demo models. You can usually buy speakers for at least 35% off MSRP if they are demo models AND you have the manufacturers warranty. If you can find a good set of towers you may be able to hold off on getting a sub until later. In terms of a receiver you may just want to use whatever you have and pick one up later. Receivers start getting better at around $500 in terms of quality of sound and features. Good luck!
