It's OK. Just don't turn the volume up all the way!

What speaker do you have and are you planning on buying the same speaker which would be a good idea. What amp will you be using? For most music you will be using just a few watts of power, even at loud volumes. And if you are using 1 speaker, I hope you have what ever preamp you are using set to mono otherwise you will be missing 1/2 the music

There is no set answer. Use your ears.

BR is giving you good advice. I only have this to add and, if you remember it, it will serve you well:

If it starts to sound bad, turn it down immediately!*

It's a warning that something is not happy and it could save you money in repairs.

    * This is good advice in all situations, not just here.

Speaker power handling ratings are often just a guess or marketing. What on earth are they based on? The power a speaker can handling varies with the frequency and duration of the signal, in any case. What speakers do you have?

Do you really have a 1000 watt amp? What is it?

You cannot tell how much power an amp is putting out from the volume setting. The power output is dependent on a whole host of factors. But as someone said, if the sound is distorted, turn the volume down!
