I suggest:
www.partsexpress.com
www.madisound.com
for starters.
You can make a very good quality speaker yourself and save yourself a lot of money, but you're better off buying a kit as a 1st project -you've got a ton of learning to do before building from scratch.

Kexodusc is right about Madisound and Partsexpress, they are great places to start, there is also Meniscus audio and Speaker City USA. Some of these places will help you build a kit and design your crossovers. You can also look at buying drivers on E-Bay and Audio Classics. If you do your homework and research your projects, there is no reason why you can't build something really great. You can research companies like Focal, Dynaudio, Accuton,Vifa,Seas,Peerless, Swans, Morel and Scan-Speak, this would give you an idea of what's out there and how much they charge. Meniscus audio use to make kits using some of the best drivers that these companies made. You should go to www.meniscusaudio.com and request a catalog and check out their designs.

Of interest for products they might carry but others don't, or those living in Canada ...
