Looking for some help...

Hi all, I was hoping someone here could help me out. I was recently burglarized and had all my stereo equipment stolen. The insurance company is trying to shaft me on the value of a pair of speakers I had, but I am having trouble locating a fairly comparable set that's currently available, to show them as a reasonable replacement cost. I figured a forum like this must have lots of experts that might be able to help out.

My old speakers were Yamaha NS-A838 speakers. The insurance Co. is trying to value replacement cost at like $53.00, but I don't think I can find something comparable for that. Everything I've found is either not as good, or much more expensive... so can anyone throw me some suggestions for speakers that might compare that are currently available?

Here's the stats on the old ones, right from Yamaha:

They are called bookshelf speakers, but they're 15 lbs a piece and I used them on the floor anyway.

Tell them to find a pair of that exact model number in the same condition and buy them for you. They may realize that is not a fair price.

Yamaha's website lists them at $150. I presume that is each. Locate a local dealer on the website and get their actual selling price. That would be the legitimate replacement price presuming you have replacement value insurance and not just a regular policy which would only give you the depreciated value.

If they are no longer a currently available model then it would seem that $150 would be a fair price plus inflation from the last year they were sold (call Yamaha).

Can anyone think of a fairly similar set of speakers one could actually go out and purchase today?

Where do you want to shop for these? If you're thinking of going out to a big box electronics store, maybe the Polk Audio TSi200 would be comparable and available.

Those are all good choices by BlackRaven. If you should decide on the Energy C100's you can get them a little cheaper at Vann's with free shipping.

Also you may want to get a subwoofer to match since your old speakers had a 12 inch woofer (I used to own their little brother, the Yamaha, the 638's with a 8"). I recently bought the Energy WS8 and it's a great sub. If you do decide to go that route, order soon, I believe it's a discontinued model. Audio Advisior is out, but you can but it here, free shipping as well.

I know you're probably anxious, to replace your speakers, and would like to just go in a store and buy some, but maybe your area, is like mine, all we have here, is a big box store. In my opinion for what it's worth, no matter what you decide to buy, I think you'd be happier and get more bang for your buck if you ordered online and waited. Most likely you would have it in a week or less.
