Battle of the SUBS!!

I am in the works of purchasing a sub. I have looked at several brands and have kinda started narrowing down the selections. I am going to use the sub for mostly HT. The selections are as follows: Velodyne CHT-12, Paradigm PS1000, 1200, and the B&W AWS 600, 650.

Budget?

$500-600,....really closer to $500 if at all possible.

Just my 2 cents, here...

I have 2 HT/music systems in my house. I used to have the Paradigm PW-2200 on my "reference" system. Although "pleased" with its performance, I thought something was missing in the "lower octave" for a sub with that size and power. So I moved my VTF-2 from my second system for a try and WHAT A SURPRISE!! The "smaller" VTF-2 smoked my Paradigm PW-2200, Yes... it simply played lower and with more authority than the bigger, more phisically imposing PW-2200. Amazing when taking $$$price into consideration.

The PW-2200 goes for $799 while you can buy the VTF-2 directly from Hsu Research for $449 + shipping in a "beautiful and slick" piano black finish.

BTW, I do 50/50 HT and music and the VTF-2 proves to be the great performer at both.

They have free shipping on this item. Personally, I built the Titanic MKII 12" and it has a wonderful sound. It only takes about an hour to put this together. Also look under the DIY discussion and check out Sealed's article on his DIY subwoofer from parts express.

I bought a SVS 20-39PCi a couple of months ago and it is flat out amazing. It goes lower than anything I have ever heard. I have knocked pictures off the wall with it at high volumes. CD's and DVD's are a new experience. I am hearing and feeling things that I did not know exist.

The two numbers are its frequency range and height. Mine plays flat to 20 Htz and is 39" tall. Their other cylinder models are 25-31 and 16-46.

Mine was $599 plus shipping and I consider that a bargain.

Regards to HSU subs too. I cannot recommend because I have not heard one personally, but from what I understand, they produce a great sound as well. Either of these two brands (along with adire audio) are widely considered the best "bang for you buck" subs in production today.

The Velodyne CHT-12 would be a nice choice, but i would personally save up for the CHT-15 ($599?) it has far cleaner bottom octave bass. With its current sensing servo the CHT-15 handles music much better than the CHT-12 (which tends to sound a little muddy).

Just for fun :) I recorded a short video(with sound) of my CHT-15 playin a 16hz tone at full volume. (Just a sidenote u can't hear 16hz, you can feel it though!!)

Warning: This contains a high volume, low bass tone that may damage lesser speaker systems!!

haha thanks for the video. That sub doesn't seem to have a lot of excursion though. This is why I'm gonna agree with Poneal and reccomend the 12" kit, or better yet the 15" kit with 1000 watt amp and parametric equalizer. The 15" displaces 3 liters of air, and has an xmax of 20mm, 5 mm from an inch. I'd never buy a sub, get so much more for your money with DIY (IMO).

I think that a 15" would be too much. I believe that a 12" would do just fine. I would hate to purchase a sub that is too powerful for my particular application. It just seems like wasting when you have a huge sub that is turned down so low. Why not just get a 12" and have it turned up just a bit?

for under 500 bucks its hard to beat the adire rava. Ived owned one for about a year. I use it (and abuse it) for about 50/50 music and HT. It handles both well. It may not stop your heart in a large room, but itll get the job done, and its plenty loud enough for anything medium, its a quick and accurate sub, and build like a tank. I love it.

In the $500 - $600 category I would go with either the Adire Audio Rava (primary music), HSU VTF-2 (50/50 split between music and HT), or SVS (mostly HT) PB1-ISD or 25-31PCi. If you have something other than your primary receiver to power it with you may consider the VMPS New Original Subwoofer or SVS 20-39CS+.
