Help my wife and me find common ground!

Hi all, been a while since I posted and just as long since I've been keeping up with home theater. I just finished building our custom house and am now thinking about the A/V setup.

I ran over 6000 feet of low voltage wiring for integrated A/V and am pretty much set on the "innards" of my system, but need some help with a few components.

In order to get some of the things I wanted, the wife and I had to compromise - for example, I wanted floor standing mains and a flat screen, she said no way, only in-walls. So I got some in-walls from www.htdaudio.com and am hoping they'll work out (I'll be doing a second audio-only 2-channel system in my study, and that'll have some nice big B&W's to satisfy me. However, now I need a new sub to go with the in-walls. I'll be using the Yammie RX-V2500 as my primary and want a powered sub that will work in a 25- by 40-foot great room. The problem is, it has to have a furniture finish, preferably a cherry veneer.

Also, I want an HDTV but the wife says it has to be hidden for parties and when we have clients over (it'll be our model as well as our home) so I either need a plasma display in the wall with a motorized screen to cover it (very expensive) or a piece of furniture to hide the screen...

    So in summary:

    1) good sub with a cherry finish, on par with svs/paradigm/partsexpress

    2) how do I get HDTV without the typical "huge box" that a rear projector (even DLP) has - frpont projector is not an option due to room architecture

    Thanks in advance!

There are entertainment cabinets with doors even for large screen TVs. While the unit itself is large they at least look like furniture and with the doors closed there's no ugly gray screen or boxy cabinet. Most of these have shelves to house electronics or various nick nacks often with glass doors and internal lights. All in all they can be pretty classy.

'Course the roll up screen is fine if you can afford the $$$$

Re: inobtrusive HDTV - Don't know what to tell you. I agree with hermanv that an entertainment cabinet is one way to accomplish the task, but if you want it to look nice, i.e., a piece of fine furniture, you're talking about a significant piece of change.

Re: subwoofer that meets the WAF - Given the size of your room, you're probably going to want to go with a fairly large sub or perhaps two mediums size ones. You didn't mention how much you wanted to spend, so I assume price is not too limiting a factor. If I were in your shoes, I'd look at the following:

    One of these:

http://www.audioc.com/speakers1/titan/titan.htm (big but very reasonably priced for what you get)

    or one of these:

http://www.triadspeakers.com/products/irpps.html (very big and pretty expensive, but you can get it in almost any finish)

    or one of these:

http://rel.net/index2.htm (also big and fairly expensive)

    or two of these:

    http://www.audioc.com/speakers1/force/force.htm

or two of these (actually one package with two subs):

    http://www.av123.com/products_produc...rs&product=3.1

There are many possibilities; perhaps others will chime in. Also, another consideration -- in-wall or infinite baffle subs. I don't know alot about them; I understand they can get quite expensive but they have great WAF.

    Good luck!

Have you considered the possibility of a projector and retractable screen?

You might try looking at subs from Legacy www.legacy-audio.com. They have subs which go very deep, are very powerful and look great.

    another sub choice...

NHT makes an in-wall, boxed, 12" subwoofer. You could probably "hide" a couple of these with furniture.
    Their website is www.nhthifi.com
Look for the IWS under architectural speakers.
