I have a Klipsch Promedia 4.1 system. The speakers are connected through the subwoofer and the subwoofer provides the speakers with power and has an amplifier for the whole system. Recently, the subwoofer stopped working and when i plug in the sub it makes a buzzing noise and when i unplug the subwoofer, the buzzing rises to a loub beep and suddenly stops. I opened up the subwoofer and look at the inside but i was unable to determine the problem because i do not know much about audio systems. My speakers can not function without the subwoofer because they need the power and amp. How can i make the speakers work without fixing the subwoofer and what can i do to fix the subwoofer?

I am fairly good at fixing things and although i dont know very much about subwoofers, i believe that with some help I can make my subwoofer functional again or at least make just my speakers work. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. My screen name on AIM is theperson222...

so if you unplug all the other speakers from the back, feed a simple signal like a portable cd player into the preamp in and power on the sub, what happens ?

That's what you are going to need to master in order to fix your subwoofer/amplifier.

Did you read that little rectangle with the two triangles on the back of the unit? The days of yanking the tubes out and trucking to the local Radio Shack to test 'em are long gone. Unless you have some idea of what's going on there and the necessary tools to troubleshoot this stuff the odds of you fixing it are slim to none.

Just looking for bad parts rarely provides the answer. And, if a part is obviouisly bad, many times when it dies either another bad part caused it or it takes other parts with it. Many guys have replaced transistors only to haver them blow again instantly upon powerup because another part caused them to blow in the first place.

The guys who do fix this kinda stuff for a living have knowledge, training and experience and deserve to be compensated for that. If it were that easy they wouldn't be needed but alas, they are. I'm pretty good with tools but you won't see me asking a dentist how could I do a root canal with a B & D variable speed drill and no training.

As far as the other speakers, I suppose you could use then with a receiver but understand that they will probably bo very lacking in bass and attempting to force them to reproduce serious bass may cause them damage. The bass box(it ain't a subwoofer) and amp combo probably did a "Bose" and diverted the bass from them.

I had a set of these for some time, the sound quality is good and klipsch equipment usually lasts a long time. You may want to replace them with the Promedia GMX 5.1 which you can find on ebay for about $ 130

The sound you describe sounds like a short circuit either on your sound source cables or in the amplifier. try connecting your promedia system to another source (walkman or whatever) to see if you still have the problem. If this is so, you probably have a problem with your amp shorting out, this cant be fixed without specific electronics knowledge, and will probably be cheaper for you to buy a used replacement than to fix the speakers.

Finally, the satelite speakers that come with this speaker system have limited frequency range, if you try to drive them with a regular amp or receiver (without the crossover that is in the sub box) they will eventually be damaged or blow.
