    Toronto Audio Show

Just wondered if anyone else was aware of this show? I've been seeing some pictures and posts, looks like a good show. A lot of the big manufacturers are there. Not sure how far this would be for some of you up there but looks like the show will be one that will generate some buzz.

I guess you're referring to the TAVES Consumer Electronics Show. I wasn't aware of it myself, though I ought to have been given I live fairly close to Toronto.

It's was on only Friday thru today. I'd go today if I actually lived in T.O. but as it is, I won't make it.

That's the one. I'm not sure if this is the first year but it's the first I've known about it. Looks like it is and will be one of the big shows though, I've seen pics from MSB, Naim and B&W to name a few.

It is a good possibility. We were supposed to go this year but plans fell through. So we are looking to make it next year if possible. Did Mark ever get his system up and going again?

Yes he did. I badgered him. He also bought the PS Audio DSD DAC and loves it. I have to admit it is an excellent sounding DAC as I have had the chance to hear one in my system. My friend Dean who could not make it to the dinner at Axpona bought one and brought it over to my house. I am thinking about selling my Luxman and buying the PSA.

Both are excellent DAC's but I love the air and transparency of the PSA. The Luxman has a deeper and sweeter midrange though.

When it gets closer to RMAF next summer we should talk about getting a group together to meet there. My daughter and Mark's daughter both live and work in Denver.

Interesting you like the Direct Stream. I found it to be extremely neutral and detailed, I liked it but I wouldn't have guessed it to be your taste. I do think there have been some firmware updates and different filters as well since I've heard one last.

Looks like harbeth & Vinnie Rossi are together at most of the shows.

I can't remember which software version the DSD was using but it was one of the newer versions. I was also using the Regen with the DSD, which warms things up a bit. The DSD and the Luxman are 2 different flavors like chocolate and vanilla. I like both.

I would like to hear the Vinni Rossi tube DAC and preamp.

The Luxman honeymoon is over? It was just a few months ago when you posted that you were done with your system, that the Luxman was so analog sounding that you don't even have to upgrade your turntable or cartridge. What happened?

That show was less than a 5 minute drive from my house! If anyone goes next year, be sure to let me know. Drinks are on me!

Jack, I love the Luxman. The PSA is just different sounding. The Lux does some things better and the PSA does some things better. I have not yet decided to sell the Luxman so I can get the PSA. I am considering it. I would rather sell the X250 amp and buy a used X250.5 or 250.8 or sell the BAT and find a BAT VK-52se or a VK-32se.

For me, air & transparency normally trump other attributes.

I'm somewhat astonished by the increase in air & transparency that my Bifrost DAC's Multibit upgrade as afforded, although I wouldn't expect it to equal the PS Audio's

Wise choice on the whole. Though I haven't heard the original X250, the $2250 increase in price when the .5 series was introduced and the changes to the amp to justify the price increase would make me want to upgrade.

Well you know that I have to keep pace with Mr. P

Ok, seeing as I got this thread off topic, I might as well tell the "joke of the day"

There was the old man jewish man named Mr. Goldberg that decided to go to confession at church. At confession the he tells the priest that he is 87 years old and that he has been having sex with a 22 year old woman. He say that she is smoking hot and that she can't get enough of him and that they are having sex twice a day. The priest then ask's the old man if they are married. Mr. Goldberg then replies "no we are not". The priest all of a sudden recognizes the old mans voice and ask's "is that you Mr Goldberg, the old man that owns the Deli down the street". The old man replies "yes". The priest then says "Mr Goldberg, you are jewish and should not be telling me this". To which Mr. Goldberg replies, "I AM TELLING EVERYONE"!

I think the only way to keep pace with Mr. P is to get in his will.

Here are the differences between the PSA and Luxman

    The Luxman

-Has a deep rich analog midrange and is very smooth and liquid sounding, this is where the DAC shines.
-Good air and transparency with very good separation between instruments
-Very good sound stage, wide with good depth
-Bass is deep, powerful with some bloom and warmth
    -Very good detail and resolution
-General tone leans just a bit to the warm side

    PS Audio DSD DAC

-Its midrange is lighter with more air but it is still smooth sounding
-Excellent air and transparency with excellent separation between instruments
-Excellent sound stage, very wide and tall but not quite as deep as the Luxman
-Bass is very good, very tight and fast but not as deep as the Luxman and there is no bloom
-Excellent detail and resolution, a bit better than the Luxman
    -General tone is neutral

With the Regen on board the PSA's bass is noticeably deeper and there is a little more warmth and analog sound but still not as good as the Luxman. The Regen improves the sound of both DAC's by making the background darker and the music is just more musical.

So take you pick, both DAC's sound great. The Luxman is more analog, warmer with deeper bass and a little bit of bloom and romantic sound while the PSA has a bit more detail, air, transparency and separation with tighter but less powerful bass and no bloom.

Feanor, you would love the Exogal Comet DAC. It has the most air and transparency along with widest and most 3D sound stage that I have heard. It is extremely holographic.

Thanks for that, BR. It certainly sounds as if I'd like the Exogal. Pretty far beyond my budget at this time though. Shipped to me in Canada it would run Cdn$3700.
