    December Movie Previews

Nothing to write home about this month except maybe for Stallone and DeNiro film.

    Ranked by release date:

The Last Days on Mars:As their last day on Mars draws to a close, the astronaut crew is on the verge of a major breakthrough – collected rock specimens reveal microscopic evidence of life.

Khumba:Rejected by his superstitious herd, a half-striped zebra embarks on a daring quest to earn his stripes but finds the courage and self-acceptance to save all the animals of the Great Karoo.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug:Continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

Tyler Perry's a Madea Christmas:Madea dispenses her unique form of holiday spirit on rural town when she's coaxed into helping a friend pay her daughter a surprise visit in the country for Christmas.

American Hustle: It tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent.

Saving Mr. Banks:Inspired by the extraordinary, untold backstory of how Disney’s classic “Mary Poppins” made it to the screen.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues:With the 70's behind him, San Diego's top rated newsman, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell), returns to the news desk.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty:Ben Stiller directs and stars in James Thurber's classic story of a day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action.

Grudge Match:The story revolves around retired boxers Billy The Kid McGuigan and Henry Razor Sharp, lifelong bitter rivals who are coaxed out of retirement and into the ring for one final grudge match -- 50 years after their last title fight.

Lone Survivor: Incredible tale of four Navy SEALs on a covert mission to neutralize a high-level al-Qaeda operative who are ambushed by the enemy in the mountains of Afghanistan.

    Thanks for the update, Smokey.

The only real must-see for me is The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. As a hard-core Tolkien fan I'm not keen on Peter Jackson's tweaks to the story and various excesses but I will go see it. (See Jackson's changes listed HERE.) The worse of the first Hobbit was the over-blown, hyperbolic action scenes but I suppose you've got to do that in today's movie market.

What hard-core fans hate is Jackson's modifications to Tolkien's plot and charactiers, (e.g. the excessively young & callow Frodo, (Elijah Wood), and plot changes around the Faramir character in the LoTR flicks). On the other hand I have no problem with Jackson drawing background material from the Appendices to the LoTR; actually it would be great to see Jackson do so films based on the Silmarillion but last I heard he doesn't have rights to that book.
