how loud do you listen part II

I started a new thread since the prior is getting so long.

    New question
have you ever gone outside your house to see how loud it sounds when you are playing it loud?

I live in the county so I can play it real loud with the windows open or late at night for HT etc... without any problems.

Just wondering if this is an issue for others.
What about if you are in an apartment. I would imagine if you have a high quality system you play it at a low volume but still enjoy the superb sound quality.

I live in a single home on 1/2 acre but have neighbors. It can be heard directly around the house and maybe at the street if all the windows are open.

My outdoor setup is a reverse amphitheater so I can listen pretty loud under the patio but barely hear it if I walk out to the back fence.

Never put a meter on it though.

I only have neighbors on one side so being too loud isn't a problem. I have woods behind me for about 300 yards before there are any houses. When I'm working in the yard, I sometimes turn the outdoor speakers up a bit. I do have volume control outside if I need it.

I rarely play above an average level of 70 dB on either my stereo or HT systems. The stereo is on the street side of the house and window's don't open in that rooms, furthermore it's a fairly noisy street so I doubt that anyone would ever notice. The HT system is 80% subterranean so it's even less likely than anyone would hear it.

I like to listen at close to live levels, and that can be high enough to elicit complaints from neighbors.

The nice thing about open baffle bass is it does not carry through walls. As long as I cover the heat/air ducts with throw pillows my wife can sleep peacefully two rooms away with my system playing fairly loud.

I also enjoy listening on my screen porch with my back to the house and facing my outdoor speakers. I can play these loud but the sound does not carry either. If the speakers were mounted on the house facing the backyard the sound would be louder but wouldn't sound as good.

In my house in the bay area, my neighbors tell me they never hear music coming out of my listening room even though I play that system at pretty live levels. The HT room is in a sound proof room, so I cannot hear anything outside, and nobody(not even in the house) can hear what is going on inside. With everything off, that room is so quiet, I feel like I am in a anechoic chamber.

    Sir Terrance

well that sounds like the way to go sound proofing your HT and listening room maybe not an option for a lot of us

But I know I will miss the day when I move from my 5 acres and have to at least think about the neighbors for my HT and music.

Although I do not when I play it loud it is not as long as when I was younger

    thanks for all the comments

The newer insulated double pane windows help to keep the sound inside.

    STT,

the only time i ever saw soundproofing done well, it was done to a garage converted into a studio by my friend (whose house it was) and tim pinch, whom you may even know. he recorded the dimeola 'friday night in san francisco' with his recording van.

actual live levels couldnt be heard outside the garage. it was almost like (and structurally was) like a room inside a room. you guys get real serious sometimes.

I tried out an SPL app on my iPhone today. I apparently listen at above 80 dB, measured 9 feet from the speakers.

It's called Ivrysis The Real SPL Meter. I ran a search for "spl meter" and this was 2nd on the list.

I use the Studio Six Digital version. It has a classic analog appearance along with high output ranges.
