I know the background, but these two bands couldn't have been more different from one another. Not only was their approach to rock-n-roll different, the lead singer for Mother Love Bone (Andrew Wood) was little more than a Axl-Rose-wannabe (IMHO) and was not the writer that Eddie Vedder is. Pearl Jam gets my vote on their merit alone. In a stand-off twix Alice In Chains and Mother Love Bone, Alice would win hands down. Had Wood not died, MLB would have been awash in the heavy metal backlash that other non-grunge acts suffered after 1990 and whatever band Eddie Vedder wound-up in would have still garnered success.
