    Concerts

I'm going to see Rene Marie, female Jazz vocalist at the Dakota Jazz club tonight here in Minneapolis and tomorrow I'm going to see Ramsey Lewis at the same club. It should be a good time. The Dakota is a very intimate setting.

I'm glad you posted this. From a listen on Rhapsody, that CD sounds like something I'll be ordering.

Never heard of her but I see she has Mulgrew Miller and Jeff "Tain" Watts on her album and I know them both. I'll have to take a listen to her CD. Thanks for enlightening me Raven. Sounds like you are going to have a very good holiday weekend. Wish I was there with you to enjoy both of those fine concerts. Let me know how they where.

I just got back from the concert and it was great. She has a fantastic voice and stage presence. Her band was killer. I'll be buying a couple of her CD's.

This Jazz club has a great up coming schedule. Aimee Mann is playing next week and I hope to score some tickets. Joe Sample and the Crusaders are also coming this month. Richie Havens and Janiva Magness are also coming in october.

The Turtle Island Quartet is playing as well and they are doing a tribute to Jimi Hendrix which ought to be interesting.

Glad you had fun. I'll be interested in Ramsey's performance. Do you know how many players he is bringing? Last I knew he was working in a trio format.

    obscure artists

and renee marie is one, one that needs not to be obscure. i listen to the radio, jazz mostly, and when i hear something like that i write it down and either keep my eyes open for it at the stores OR actually buy it online.

    another obscurity is giacomo gates.

    http://www.giacomogates.com/

what a great voice and performer. i now have at least two by him and one or two by renee. hif 'fly right' is particularly good.

the problem is that many great artists are regionally limited for which there must be many reasons.

here in LA i have been fortunate to have seen many fine artists. some are infrequent visitors like patricia barber and ben sidran. we are lucky to have repeat visits from kurt elling, dan hicks, and many another great player. some live here like jackson browne but he isnt usually found in intimate settings.

in this economy its hard to support them by attending but i try to cherry pick certain ones-i just saw chris isaak at the greek and i have tickets to see WAR at COC in january:

another great but slightly obscure band is DADA. not to be missed in performance:

and none of their CDs are a bad purchase.

It will be a trio. It's pretty amazing that they got him to come. They have been trying for years. He's coming on short notice, they had a cancellation and he agreed to come on 2 weeks notice. I think he may have an album that's coming out and wants to promote it.

Tommy that's a great schedule at the COC. Looks like a cool venue. You can tell us about Micheal Bolton, it;s ok. We won't judge you.

War would be a great show you lucky dog.

I would suggest Big Voodoo Daddy, I have seen them here. I know all the usually jokes about getting "squeaky clean" and such but they are truly entertaining live. Do you recall the whole swing revival? It started in LA...

I can live without most of it but I am always up for entertainment. Please tell us how the Micheal Bolton show goes, perhaps he will sing "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You".....oooooooh, let's hope.

I am hit and miss with his output, but everything he's done in a trio has been fantastic. You're in for a real treat, but I suppose you know this. Please post any pics you are able to take, if any.

    oYEAH,

bolton with the quintessential mullet (balding at the top). i can never seem to find any of his records in the jazz bins. for that reason, i dont have ANY.

BBVD does play here now and again. perhaps i will try them. my daughter was going to van nuys high school where the music department is tops. their big band was very good and put on quite a show. the performing arts students put on a swing dance exhibition that was pretty aggressive. some notables went to school there-marilyn monroe and robert redford.

the year my daughter graduated there, the marching band won the finals in santa barbara. those shows were fantastic. one of the members of the band went on to the santa clara Vanguard marching band-big time champs. same quality of performance seen in the movie Drum Line.

a great dvd by war is War's Greatest Hits Live (2008):

    http://www.google.com/products?hl=&q...ed=0CDcQrQQwAg

i saw it on pbs and had to have it.

this one from 1980 is crap so dont bother:

    http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p...0:fvfuxzwkld6e

poorly recorded in sound, i was sorely disappointed in my purchase. i dont know why they approved it, maybe they didnt.
