Hey Chubby, Oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhh Yeeeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh, they catch PLENTY of ears this side of the universe.

Call me crazy, but my 770's sound is so linear, flat and accurate. I have listened to other 770's and they just don't even come close to mine. I had the crossovers tuned, connectors re-soldered, and the crossover points slightly revised for flatter response curve, plus mine wear the large magnet 1.5" LPF tweeters, which are pretty rare, as most (approx 90% of the HD/DS line) had the small magnet 1.5" tweeters.

hi Dakata, I just prepped, cleaned & repainted the original black to White. It will not affect the sound output at all, not even in the slightest whisper or linearity waveguide

Mainly my Pioneer SX-1980, but I have powered them with my SX-1250 & SX-1280. The 1250 & 1280 are really sonically different than their monster big brother. They have a bit more warmth and brightness, whereas, the 1980 has a Tube-Like Sound with more Clarity and detail.

Hey, I'll trade you those DC-2000 CV's for whatever you want that I have, except for the 1980, of course

I've been trying to find a pair of those 2000's for the better part of 10 years.

Pioneer SX-1980 is a killer! I had the chance to see it and hear it only once! Sounds amazing!

There's an aluminum plate around the tweeter! That seems like couture...looks at the expense of function.

Nahh, not a chance. Are you kidding? The aluminum plate IS the tweeter. These were designed by Edmond May who was responsible for most of the Success of JBL speakers from 60's to 70's. There was no expense spared when it came to sound quality. These speakers were almost $1000/pr in 1978-79. I would consider that high quality all the way around, especially for back then, that was TON of green in those days. These speakers when properly tuned, are so clear, smooth, flat, accurate and quick, they easily compare to speakers costing 10X as much, no pun intended of course.

That would mean they should compete with today's $3,000 speakers. Do you believe they would be in that league? I've never heard a great Marantz speaker, and that's coming from a long-time Marantz fan.

Yes, they Easily compare to todays $3000 variants. I also have been a long time Marantz Fan. I have heard many $3000 & up newer speakers, and they do sound great & all, but just lack the depth or clarity, that's just me. Newer speakers just sound so over-colored, muddy, out of phase & harsh to me, I'm sorry. I'm curious to what was powering the Marantz speakers you heard, and what models you heard. I will say my first experience with a pair of HD880's from one of my brother's friends many years ago left me less than impressed. They didn't sound very good to me. Then on the other hand, I acquired a pair of derilect all original HD880's a few years ago that I had rebuilt the crossovers, refoamed the original woofers, altered the crossover points of the tweeters, and those are better than ANY $3000 speaker of today, hands down.

No offense but that's the reason you didn't have good sound. Matching big HD880's to a small receiver is like matching a go-cart with a 18 wheeler truck, lol! HD880's are not all that efficient, around 90dB @ 1W/1M, and they need at least a 100 WPC amp with good frequency response and damping factor to make them sound good. My HD880's with my SX-1980 sound so full, so smooth, so clear, so detailed, and so powerful, and have such a wide/huge soundstage.
