    Speaker recommendations?

I am getting a Denon AVR-589 and need to replace my current speakers. I need a stereo configuration, possibly upgraded to 2.1 later, bookshelf, will be in my 10*10*8(w*l*h, carpeted) room, need to sound good with music such as Tool, Isis, Sublime, Fall of troy. I'm young, can you tell? I would like to spend no more than $300, and these will be wall mounted, so <20lbs. I am considering a used pair of B&W 685. I've also heard PSB and Polk would be good for what I'm doing, but what more specifically. Also, my source for everything will be 128kbps AAC files through s/pdif digital from my computer. I would like them to have kind of a big sound, kind of like the 685's. Any suggestions?

The suitable PSB speakers for your criteria can be found here, as well as some Energy speakers that would do well, too:

I don't think the Polk speakers in this price range are going to help you. Their LSi series is decent, but their speakers under the $300 limit aren't up to the competition. The Athena speakers at the above-linked page might be better...maybe the Boston speakers, too.

That Denon is for sale at Costco for $170. Too bad you can't go for $399 and get the 5.1 Energy Take Classic at Costco. With their sub you would get great big ultra clean sound and much lower bass than any small bookshelf speaker in a 10 x 10 room especially with the Denon's 5 channel stereo mode. They will sound better against the wall than the standard bookshelf speaker. They are available at Amazon and Audio Advisor for the same price, no tax and free shipping.

Or if you haven't actually bought the 589 yet you could go for this package at Vann's, the Take Classic with the Denon AVR-1609 which is the same receiver (with a couple minor extras) as the 589 (different dealers) for $490. Great deal!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. If you only want two speakers for $300 that really rock look at these from SVS:

Of course, in the future a sub will always help.
